Katarina is a single mother living in Medicine Hat, Alberta, doing everything she can to rebuild a safe and stable life for her two-year-old daughter, Blake, after surviving devastating domestic violence.
During what was supposed to be the most sacred time — her postpartum year — Katarina’s life took a terrifying turn. The abuse began and escalated quickly, eventually involving weapons. After enduring more than any person ever should, she made the courageous decision to leave in order to protect herself and her baby.
That decision saved their lives — but it came at a high cost.
Katarina and her daughter spent a year in a women’s shelter, starting over with almost nothing. Today, they finally have a home of their own — but they continue to face immense emotional and financial hardship as they work to rebuild their lives from the ground up.
❤️ Where Things Stand Now
Katarina has been sober for 18 months after nearly a decade of addiction. She’s healing from trauma, parenting solo, and navigating the isolation that comes with starting over. Every day, she chooses growth, healing, and presence for her daughter — but it hasn’t been easy.
Blake is the light of her life, and her smiles and giggles remind Katarina daily why this fight is worth it.
Mental Health Commitments:
• In the past 7 months, Katarina has attended 28+ therapy sessions (with even more before that).
• She is now increasing her commitment two-fold over the next 3 months with the active support of two psychologists.
• As of this week, after 19 months on a waitlist, she finally has her first psychiatry appointment — a major step forward.
Now more than ever, she needs support and stability so she can focus on healing — not just surviving.
