My name is Nina Douglass, and I am a licensed social worker seeking donations to help a young family facing imminent homelessness resulting from the father's detention at Otay Mesa, a private detention center in San Diego which derives its profits from the imprisonment of immigrants. His postpartum wife, Maria, a devout Christian, is the indigenous Mayan (Guatemalan) mother of their four children, ages eight months to 12 years, all of US citizens. Despite just one month's lapse in paying rent since her husband's detention last December, the family was evicted by their home's property management and landlord.
The family's story was recently covered by the San Diego Tribune: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/immigration/story/2022-05-29/immigration-detention-eviction
Maria has used the limited funds she had to pay rent and legal fees while her husband has been in immigration custody. She and the children have been told they must leave their home by June 8. As of June 6, they have nowhere to go, and no means to pay for rent.
It is heartbreaking to imagine what dire circumstances may lie ahead for this family. Maria asks for any amount of support, which will go directly to her to help secure safe, affordable housing and other basic needs.
