Help young Diego Santiago battle cancer
Donation protected
Diego Santiago is a young boy who has recently been diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. Ewing Sarcoma is a cancerous tumor that occurs in the bones or the soft tissues around the bones. The current standard treatment for patients with localized Ewing Sarcoma is to give chemotherapy and then either remove the tumor by surgery or treat the tumor with radiation therapy. Some patients will have both surgery and radiation therapy, and Diego is one of them. He will be under this intense array of treatments for nine months. He will start with Induction Therapy , which will reduce the cancer and shrink the tumor for his upcoming surgery. This therapy makes operation on Diego a much safer endeavor. Next, his tumor will be locally controlled and removed. Lastly, after the completion of his surgery, he will go through another round of a different type of therapy, which is called Consolidation Therapy. This specific type of therapy focuses on killing any remaining cancer cells so the tumor is less likely to return. Diego is ten years old. His mother and father both work, but that will change very shortly, as his mother must quit her job so she can provide 24/7 care for her son. She will have left her job in 12 weeks, and when she does, she will lose her health care and be unable to pay Diego’s extensive medical bills. Diego’s bills must be paid if he wants to survive, and he must also be able to be cared for and have the present support of his mother throughout his weeks of chemo, surgery, and radiation. Diego’s parents, Vilmarie and Felix Santiago, also have two other children they need to support while they are going through this trauma, and because of that it is becoming exceedingly difficult for them to make ends meet and provide for their family while also making sure that young Diego gets the care he needs.
