Yassenia’s beloved 2-year-old dog, koa, has been through more than any pet should ever have to endure. Just three months ago, koa underwent a major surgery after swallowing a toy, which resulted in the loss of part of his intestines. Since then, he had been on prednisone to help keep his white blood cell count stable, and everyone hoped he was on the road to recovery.

But recently, koa was rushed to the hospital after suddenly bleeding from his nostrils and choking. The initial hope was that the nosebleeds were related to his medication or the previous surgery. The vet even considered the possibility of rat poison exposure, but that never made sense—koa has never been anywhere near it. This morning, the heartbreaking call came: it wasn’t the medication, the surgery, or poison. Koa was diagnosed with lymphoma. On top of that, he has a heart murmur and is far too weak to undergo a biopsy or any treatment. The family did everything possible, opening a CareCredit account and doing everything they could to try to save him, but now there is nothing more that can be done. Koa will be sent home to pass peacefully, surrounded by love.
