Help Yari Treat a Thalamic (Brain) Lesion
Our beloved Yaritza, 67 years old, affectionately known by many as Yari, has always been a hardworking and energetic woman. In recent years, she has dedicated her life to retail work and household duties. She is a loving and exemplary wife, mother, and grandmother, always concerned for the well-being of her loved ones.
Her vitality began to decline in mid-May 2025, specifically the day after Mother’s Day. She started experiencing significant weakness in her legs, along with episodes of confusion and “mental fog” at various times throughout the day. At first, we thought it might be due to an imbalance in her blood values, so during the first few days we ran several lab tests, most of which came back normal.
Since the symptoms did not improve, we decided to take her to an internist, who referred her to a neurologist. After evaluating her, the specialist observed signs of slowness and some lack of coordination, and ordered a simple brain MRI. The report revealed a “left thalamic lesion with the appearance of a diffuse glioma, likely grade 2”—in other words, a possible tumor. This was completely unexpected news for her and for all of us who love her.
The neurologist then requested a contrast-enhanced MRI and spectroscopy to obtain a more precise diagnosis. A few days later, we received the report: “Persistent lesion in the left thalamic region,” “suggestive of a primary neoplastic nature, likely grade II astrocytoma.” (further details in the report)
The next step was to consult a neurosurgeon, who immediately indicated the need for a stereotactic biopsy to determine the exact histopathological nature of the lesion. The cost of this procedure exceeds $12,000. As a family, we have made a great effort to raise this amount, and we are getting closer to reaching it, hoping to carry out the biopsy around July 12, 2025.
However, this has left the family with very limited financial resources to face what will come after receiving the biopsy results (expected two to three weeks after the sample is taken).
The neurosurgeon explained that if the diagnosis of grade II astrocytoma or higher is confirmed, she will need to undergo radiosurgery, which costs approximately $15,000. Moreover, this would be the third step in the treatment, as she would first require cycles of radiotherapy (with a similar estimated cost of $15,000), and possibly chemotherapy, the costs of which are still unknown. In addition, there will be medications and tests prescribed throughout the treatment. All of this ideally needs to be done immediately, as soon as the results are available.
This situation has been truly overwhelming for the family. We have been told that this condition, if properly treated, can have a good prognosis, but the costs are exorbitant. That is why today, full of faith, we have decided to launch this fundraising campaign to help our beloved Yari face this medical diagnosis and regain her quality of life.
We are counting on your valuable support. May God bless you.
