Yared Nigussie is a true pioneer of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in Ethiopia. He discovered the sport through expats and taught himself by studying videos—without a coach, proper mats, or even basic resources. Despite these challenges, Yared became a force to be reckoned with, competing internationally and making history for Ethiopia.
He is the JJIF African Champion (2019), a Double medalist in 2021, and has won competitions across Europe. At one point, he was ranked number one in Africa. Yared is also a second-degree Judo black belt and BJJ purple belt, showing his dedication to martial arts.
But Yared’s impact goes beyond his achievements on the mats. After years of struggling to grow BJJ in Ethiopia, he founded the country’s first and only BJJ academy, KAO BJJ. Through relentless effort and sacrifice, he has built a community and inspired others to embrace the sport. Today, his academy is proudly affiliated with Team Chokelab.
Now, Yared has an incredible opportunity to compete and train in the United States, but he needs our support to get there. This isn’t just about him; it’s about inspiring a generation of Ethiopians and showing that, even from humble beginnings, greatness is possible.
Your donation will help cover travel, training, and competition expenses. Together, we can give Yared the opportunity he has fought so hard for.
Let’s rally behind this Ethiopian BJJ trailblazer and help him achieve his dreams!
