Hello all, I am writing this to ask you for help to get my girlfriend a wheelchair accessible van.
Yanet is an awesome woman. She’s currently studying to get her Master’s degree in counseling so that she can help others. Yanet has spent most of her life in service to others in spite of her disability. She has worked at many non profit orgs helping women recover from the most terrible experiences imaginable. She’s a fighter; a truly amazing woman.
Yanet has arthrogryposis, which is a condition that affects the joints.
Some people with arthrogryposis can walk , or leave their wheelchair on their own to get into or out of most cars. Yanet cannot walk, or leave her wheelchair on her own because of the severity of her disability. Yanet commutes to a university that is about 35 minutes away by car, but because we do not have a car she can get in to, she must take the bus, or other public transportation, which means that it takes her 4 hours to go to and from school each day she goes.
We need $60,000. We are asking for $30,000. Why the difference? We are asking that our donors provide us with enough money to make the medically necessary modifications to a van to make it accessible for Yanet. Even though the modification to make a van wheelchair accessible is a medical necessity, modifications and wheelchair accessible vans are not covered under health insurance in the United States.
In general, lack of transportation means that people who use wheelchairs are often less mobile and generally have a more difficult time securing jobs. This van will also help Yanet apply for jobs. Having the van will allow us to commute more freely, and have additional travel options. Every little bit helps. Even if you can’t donate, you can help by sharing this with your friends and family.
Thank you for your help,
Michael
