Help Yaira Save Stray Dogs in Colombia

I am making this GoFundMe to support my friend, Yaira, in Colombia. She is an incredibly giving and caring person trying to help ownerless dogs living in the streets in a small town in Colombia. She has nursed back to health more dogs than she can count, continuing to take care of 10 everyday by living with them in her rented home outside of town. Her life, like so many others, was upended during the government and rebel war with lands being stolen, people being displaced, kidnapped, ransomed, and killed.

And then the stray animals populated even more due to the pandemic; many people leaving their homes and joining families in bigger cities where they could not take their pets with them. Yaira was even given a box of 5 puppies and told that if she did not take them then the owner would drown them in the river.

Life is returning to a sense of stability in Colombia, but the transition is difficult, and for some it is incredibly challenging to find a livelihood. Especially for those without support. Yaira is doing it on her own - "Making miracles happen everyday..." as she told me, wondering how she would pay for dog food and rent and food for herself.

It's hard enough to support herself, but she finds it in her heart to put the health and lives of the troubled dogs of her community above that of her own. She's been doing this for 2 years, since the beginning of the pandemic. Scraping this and that together, receiving leftover meat from the butcher, and finding support from some friends in the area.

But really, it feels to me like the support is minimal. It is difficult for a woman to earn a living in these small towns. The work available pays $5usd for an 8 hour shift; Barely enough to buy food for yourself in Colombia.

Everyday is a question of "How?"

- "How am I gonna take care of myself?"

- "How am I going to take care of these dogs?"

- "How can I support the other dogs I see in town?"

- "How am I gonna find money for rent, to pay for getting Tovi (puppy) fixed, to get more food for my dogs, to get that dog roaming the streets to the vet, more, and more, and more..."
