Help Yaiko & Totoro Rebuild After Devastating Fire
Hi everyone,
My name is Yaiko Iizuka, and I'm reaching out from Seattle during an incredibly difficult time. On April 5th, my beloved chihuahua, Totoro, and I lost our home and nearly all our possessions in a devastating apartment fire.
I've lived in Seattle for almost eight years, building a life here. Like many, I've faced challenges, including losing a job I was passionate about last month helping people at the West Seattle Food Bank. Just before the fire, my car window was also smashed during a break-in at our building. I was trying hard to stay positive, asking for a sign, and then the unthinkable happened.
On April 5th, after returning from errands, I briefly placed a Costco cardboard box on the counter/stove area. While taking Totoro out for a quick walk just minutes later, I received a terrifying call – our apartment unit was on fire. Thankfully, Totoro and I were safe outside, but the fire and subsequent water damage destroyed everything we owned. It appears the fire may have started accidentally from the stove, possibly due to an issue.
The immediate aftermath has been overwhelming. I'm so incredibly grateful for my compassionate neighbors who rushed to help, giving me clothes and shoes (I was literally left with sandals I was wearing) and even bringing a bed and blanket for Totoro. Their kindness in those first moments meant the world.
Looking ahead is challenging. Although renter's insurance assists with the hotel for now, this support is temporary and won't bridge the entire gap until I find new housing. to the extensive damage, my building management informed me I cannot return to my apartment (which needs months of repairs) and they cannot offer me another unit..
Without a current job and having lost everything, I'm facing the urgent need to find a new place to live for Totoro and myself, and replace basic necessities – from furniture and clothes to kitchen supplies and personal documents. The renter's insurance claim is in progress, but I'm currently unsure about the final payout amount and when I might receive it. The requirement to provide receipts for every single lost item adds another layer of complexity.
Totoro my loyal companion and my reason for staying strong right now. He lost his familiar bed, blankets, and toys, but he has me, and I have him. We deserve a safe place to call home again.
Totoro and I are deeply grateful for your kindness, support, and generosity during this challenging journey.
