From Dreams to Devastation: A Computer Engineering Student's Fight for Survival

My name is Yahya Abu Ouda, and I am reaching out to you from the heart of one of the world's most devastating humanitarian crises. I am a computer engineering student whose life, dreams, and future have been shattered by the ongoing war in Gaza. Today, I humbly ask for your support to help my family and me rebuild from the ashes of everything we have lost.

Life Before the Storm

Just two years ago, my life was filled with hope and promise. I was pursuing my passion for computer engineering, surrounded by friends who shared my dreams of building a better future for our community. We would spend hours discussing technology, innovation, and how we could contribute to the world through our studies. My family lived with dignity in our home in Beit Hanoun, in the northernmost part of Gaza. Despite the challenges that have always existed in our region, we had built a life of meaning and purpose.
My mother, the pillar of our family, worked tirelessly to support us after we lost our father.
She raised us with love, strength, and unwavering determination, teaching us the values of education, compassion, and resilience. My brothers and I were her pride and joy, each of us pursuing our own paths while remaining deeply connected as a family. We had dreams, plans, and a future that seemed within reach.

Those were days when laughter filled our home, when the biggest worry was an upcoming exam or a project deadline. We celebrated small victories together, shared meals around our family table, and looked forward to tomorrow with optimism. I remember the excitement of starting each new semester, the pride in my mother's eyes when I achieved good grades, and the brotherly bonds that made every challenge seem conquerable.

When Everything Changed

But war has a way of stealing everything in an instant. The conflict that began two years ago didn't just destroy buildings and infrastructure - it destroyed lives, dreams, and futures. In the span of just ten days, I lost two of my beloved brothers. The pain of losing them is indescribable, a wound that will never fully heal. These weren't just statistics in a news report; they were my companions, my friends, my family members who had their own dreams and aspirations.
The tragedy of loss runs even deeper in our family's history. My father was assass-n-ted by military forces in 2004, leaving us to grow up without his guidance and protection. My mother became both father and mother to us, carrying the weight of our family on her shoulders. Now, the same forces that took my father have taken my brothers and destroyed everything we worked so hard to build.

A Journey of Displacement and Despair

Over the past two years, we have been displaced more than six times. Each displacement brought new heartbreak, new losses, and new challenges that tested our will to survive. We went from having a home, a community, and a sense of belonging to living in a tent, struggling for the most basic necessities of life.
Currently, we are living in conditions that no human being should have to endure. The ongoing siege and famine have made every day a battle for survival. Clean water is scarce, food is limited, and medical care is nearly impossible to access. My mother, who already suffers from cartilage problems, underwent surgery during the war under the most difficult
circumstances. The lack of proper medical facilities and follow-up care has made her recovery extremely challenging.

With each displacement, I carried not just our few remaining belongings, but also the weight of shattered hopes and accumulated trauma that words cannot adequately describe. The university where I was studying computer engineering has been destroyed. The future I was building, brick by brick, through years of hard work and dedication, has been reduced to rubble.

The Reality of Survival

Our family includes young children who are growing up in circumstances no child should ever experience. They are suffering from malnutrition and lack of basic necessities. These innocent souls deserve a chance at childhood, at education, at hope for the future. Instead, they are witnessing trauma that will stay with them for life.
My mother's health continues to deteriorate without proper medical care and medication.
The surgery she underwent during the war was just the beginning of a long recovery process that requires ongoing medical attention, physical therapy, and medications that are simply not available under current conditions.
As for me, I find myself at a crossroads between despair and determination. The computer engineering degree I was pursuing represents more than just a career path - it represents hope, progress, and the possibility of contributing something meaningful to the world. But how can one study when there are no universities? How can one plan for the future when survival itself is uncertain?

A Plea for Humanity

I am not asking for charity out of laziness or entitlement. I am asking for a chance - a chance to rebuild, to heal, to continue the education that was interrupted by forces beyond our control. I am asking for the opportunity to honor the memory of my father and brothers by creating something positive from this devastation.

Your support would help us secure:

Immediate survival needs:

• Clean water and nutritious food for our family
• Essential medications for my mother's ongoing health issues
• Basic shelter improvements to protect us from harsh weather conditions
• Medical care for family members, especially the children

Rebuilding Our Future:

• Support for continuing my computer engineering education
• Resources to help family members access educational opportunities
• Tools and equipment needed to eventually rebuild our lives
• Emergency fund for unexpected medical or survival needs

Why your support matters

Every donation, no matter the size, represents more than financial assistance - it represents hope, solidarity, and the belief that human dignity transcends borders and politics. Your support tells us that we are not forgotten, that our lives matter, and that there are people in this world who care about justice and humanity.
When you contribute to our campaign, you are not just helping one family survive - you are investing in the future. You are supporting a young man who dreams of using technology to make the world a better place. You are helping a mother who has sacrificed everything for her children. You are giving hope to children who deserve a chance at a normal childhood.

Our Promise to You

If given the chance to rebuild, I promise to use every opportunity to honor your generosity. I will complete my computer engineering degree and use my skills to contribute positively to society. I will work to ensure that the children in our family receive the education and opportunities they deserve. I will carry forward the memory of my father and brothers by living a life of purpose and service.
We will never forget the kindness of those who helped us during our darkest hour. Your support will be remembered not just by our family, but by future generations who will benefit from the opportunities your generosity makes possible.
