We are raising funds to help Y and her daughter pay for a lawyer for her asylum case after being scammed out of almost $6,000 by a fake lawyer.

Background:

Y and her toddler immigrated to the US from Guatemala in 2023 and were released by immigration officers in New Mexico while their asylum case made its way through the courts. During her release, Y sought a lawyer to take on her case but was the victim of fraud. Without her awareness, she was targeted by a group of scam artists who claimed to be lawyers and claimed to apply for asylum on her behalf. These scammers defrauded Y and her family of almost $6,000 and went as far as holding sham court proceedings with fake judges to take advantage of Y.

More importantly, while these scammers took Y's money, Y's asylum case was untouched and languished in the courts. The scammers took away Y's opportunity to hire a qualified lawyer to represent her and her daughter in her asylum case, and now her eligibility window is closing quickly.

We have helped Y find a qualified lawyer to represent her in court this month, but representation is expensive ($9,500) and Y's savings were largely taken by the scammers. Please help by donating what you can and sharing widely.
