On October 14th, my dear Sister-in-Law, Ximena , was admitted to the ICU due to a very sudden and extreme onset of necrotizing fascitis in her leg, groin area, and abdomen caused by an ESBL positive E. Coli infection. Simply put, as we have come to understand it - this particular strain is largely resistant to standard treatment forms.

Upon admission, Ximena rapidly became septic and experienced multi-organ failure, as her body showed a poor response to initial treatment and given the extent of the infection. She has undergone two life-saving surgeries since the 14th to remove gangrenous tissue in her leg, groin area, and abdomen. Along with the placement of a medical vacuum to continue cleaning the open wounds. It was touch and go for several days as Ximena fought to regain consciousness and as her body continued to battle infection and organ failure.

At least one additional surgery to close the wounds will be required this week to provide her with some notion of a “normal” life when she leaves the hospital. She is also facing ongoing necessary treatment once she is well enough to be discharged if she hopes to regain any use of her leg in the future, as well as the continued need for pain management given the invasive nature of her surgeries.

We are incredibly blessed that Ximena is here with us today. She is showing slow but remarkable improvement and has been moved from the ICU to intermediate care. That said, medical bills have quickly stacked up as she remains in the hospital, between the actual stay, surgeries, medical equipment, physician fees, and pain management. While insurance covers a large portion, and we have come together as a family to help cover as much of the remaining, the expenses are simply extensive. For those unfamiliar with the health care system in Peru, this is further exacerbated by the fact that all debt to the clinic must be paid in order to be discharged.

We never thought we’d get to this place. Still, we are here now - asking for your support/donations to help cover the remaining balance owed to the hospital so that Ximena can return home (hopefully soon) after her third surgery this week and once her physicians deem her medically fit to do so.

Note that I am organizing this fundraiser on behalf of my sister-in-law as she should not be burdened by trying to navigate the financial stress resulting from such a traumatic experience as she recovers. El 14 de octubre, mi querida Cuñada Ximena, ingresó a la UCI debido a una aparición muy repentina y extrema de fascitis necrotizante en la pierna, área de la ingle y abdomen causada por una infección por E. Coli BLEE. En pocas palabras, tal como lo entendemos: esta cepa en particular es en gran medida resistente a las formas de tratamiento estándar.

Al ingresar a la clinica, Ximena rápidamente se volvió séptica y experimentó falla multiorgánica, ya que su cuerpo mostró una mala respuesta al tratamiento inicial y debido al avance de la infeccion. Se ha sometido a dos cirugías que le salvaron la vida desde el día 14 para extirpar el tejido gangrenoso de la pierna, la ingle y el abdomen, junto con la colocación de una vacuum médica para continuar con la limpieza de las heridas abiertas. Durante varios días, Ximena luchó por recuperar la conciencia y su cuerpo continuó luchando contra infecciones y fallas orgánicas.

Esta semana será necesaria una cirugía adicional para cerrar las heridas y darle cierta noción de una vida “normal” cuando salga de la clinical. También se enfrenta al tratamiento necesario continuo una vez que esté lo suficientemente bien como para ser dada de alta si espera recuperar el uso de su pierna en el futuro, así como la necesidad continua de control del dolor dada la naturaleza invasiva de sus cirugías.

Estamos increíblemente bendecidos de que Ximena esté aquí con nosotros hoy. Está mostrando una mejoría lenta pero notable y ha sido trasladada de la UCI a cuidados intermedios. Dicho esto, las facturas médicas se han acumulado rápidamente mientras ella permanece en la clinica, entre la estadía, las cirugías, el equipo médico, los honorarios del médico y el tratamiento del dolor. Si bien el seguro cubre una gran parte y nos hemos unido como familia para ayudar a cubrir lo que se pueda, los gastos son simplemente extensos. Y para quienes no están familiarizados con el sistema de atención de salud en Perú, esto se ve exacerbado aún más por el hecho de que toda la deuda con la clínica debe pagarse para poder ser dada de alta.

Nunca pensamos que llegaríamos a este lugar. Aún así, estamos aquí ahora, pidiendo su apoyo/donaciones para ayudar a cubrir el saldo restante adeudado a la clinica para que Ximena pueda regresar a casa (con suerte pronto) después de su tercera cirugía esta semana y una vez que sus médicos la consideren médicamente apta para hacerlo.
