What is Shad? Shad is a prestigious annual Canadian summer science and engineering program hosted at universities across Canada. It focuses on advanced science and entrepreneurship and provides access to world-leading mentors. The month-long program is offered at 25+ participating universities across Canada and usually costs $8100. I was lucky enough to receive $500 dollars in bursaries for this program but still must save the remaining program costs of $7600 + travel costs.

Why help? You will be helping to fund the next generation. I am extremely interested in becoming a family doctor or a nurse! Here in Canada, we have an extreme shortage of family doctors. I am hoping to help solve that problem by becoming one myself. Shad would help me gather some real-life experiences of what it would be like to attend a medical school and help me get a taste of what my future career plan could look like if I decide to pursue a career in medicine after I graduate.

I am currently employed at the local ski hill, however due to lack of snow I am no longer getting shifts. I am actively on the job hunt here in Courtenay, so I can pay as much of the fees as I can. I will keep applying to potential jobs in hopes that I will get hired. As well as being a full-time high school student, I go to the gym and am currently training for a triathlon. I volunteer at the Comox Hospital and am also practicing my volleyball skills for the next upcoming school team. Even with these extra circular activities I still manage to keep my straight A status.

When I applied for Shad Canada, I doubted that I would be accepted as it is a competitive program with applicants from across the country. I am very honored to have been accepted and am ready and able for the challenge. I am looking forward to meeting other like-minded youth dedicated to making the most of all that life offers and working towards making a better future.
