About WSPEC
The World Space Elevator Competitions (WSPEC) is an international non-profit organization with a bold vision: to enable space to benefit all of humanity. We aim to achieve this by advancing the critical technologies needed to construct a space elevator through strategic competitions.
A space elevator is a revolutionary concept: a long cable extending from Earth, held aloft by our planet's own centrifugal force. This scalable system promises to transport massive amounts of cargo and people into space, making the vast potential of the cosmos truly accessible to everyone. While the technology is in its early stages, WSPEC is dedicated to directing current research efforts towards realizing this ambitious future.
To begin our journey, the funds we are currently raising will be used for essential operational costs, including marketing and team building. This will allow us to establish our organization and ensure we can function effectively as we work towards launching the first global competitions.
Building on a Legacy, Inspiring the Future
WSPEC builds upon the foundation laid by previous space elevator competitions, including the Space Elevator Games in the US, the Japanese Space Elevator Technical Engineering Challenge (JSETEC), and the European Space Elevator Competition (EUSPEC). By uniting these efforts globally, we strive to create a cohesive and coordinated approach to overcoming the significant challenges in developing a space elevator.
Our mission is to provide purpose and drive innovators to address pressing issues, focusing on practical applications that advance current capabilities and enable further research. WSPEC's vision is to be a driving force for scientific advancement and an educational resource, inspiring students worldwide to tackle complex challenges in science, technology, arts, engineering, and mathematics (STEAM), while fostering teamwork and the pursuit of long-term objectives.
Our Competitions
To achieve our goals, WSPEC organizes competitions in various categories, each targeting specific technological advancements.
- Climber Competitions: These competitions challenge teams to design and build robotic climbers capable of ascending and descending a vertical tether. They directly advance robotics and tether technology, simulating key aspects of a space elevator system and encouraging creative solutions for vertical movement in a 1G environment.
- Power Beaming Competition: This competition focuses on power transmission over shorter distances. It evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of power delivery and reception.
Our competition categories are open to university and enthusiast teams, and we actively encourage participation. Looking ahead, we aim to expand our competitions with regional and global events, new categories, and combinations of existing ones, like integrating climbers with power beaming, to accelerate technological progress.
