Help writer Marco Ferrarese escape covid lockdown

My name is Pierpaolo and I work as a teacher of literature in Ravenna, Italy. I met that swashbuckling traveler and lover of life called Marco Ferrarese in George Town, Malaysia, using Couchsurfing. Without knowing me at all, Marco brought me with him at the George Town Literary Festival, one of the most interesting and funny I have ever participated, and we carried on at various dinners with his writer colleagues. He also gave me a lot of precious suggestions for my travels in Asia, gems that even helped me open doors for collaborations with some of the most important Italian newspapers. 

Years later, I had the joy of being his guest in his hometown Voghera, where I met his amazing parents, who welcomed me immediately as if I were a family member. For as much as Marco's stories are always filled with incredible events, this time I struggled believing his words as I read about the tragedy that hit him because of this damned coronavirus. Both his parents are now dead, killed by COVID-19, while Marco was on assignment on his first guidebook in South America, in Peru's southern Andes. Marco lost his family like that, over the phone, while the country was closing down in a very strict lockdown last March 16th. Lamentably, Marco is still stuck in Cabanaconde, from where it's pretty hard to get out. The good thing is that both Marco and his wife Kit Yeng are together, safe and healthy.

As soon as I got back on my feet after the initial shock this sad news brought upon me, I thought it was about time to pay back for all the kindness that Marco extended to me throughout the years. I then decided to create this crowdfunding, because I am sure I am not the only one with a debt with Marco -- be it his kind hospitality, his generous travel tips, the hours of engaging reading, or even just for being a real role model for all those who do not resign to live an ordinary life and have the courage to follow their own passions which, in Marco's case, keep bringing him to the four corners of the globe.  

This fundraising will help guarantee Marco and his photographer wife Kit Yeng the economical support they need to keep surviving on lockdown in Peru away from home,  create a fund for plane tickets to return to Italy and give a decent funeral to his parents, and then send him back home to Penang, Malaysia, after a necessary sojourn in Italy. Please give him a helping hand all together, even just with the cost of a coffee and cappuccino at the bar -- something that, anyhow, you won't be able to indulge in at the moment.  Let’s bring our guys back home.

Mi chiamo Pierpaolo e lavoro a Ravenna come insegnante di lettere. Ho conosciuto quell’instancabile viaggiatore e assatanato di vita che risponde al nome di Marco Ferrarese a George Town, Malesia, tramite Couchsurfing. Senza nemmeno conoscermi mi ha portato con sé al Festival letterario di Penang, uno dei più divertenti a cui abbia mai partecipato, poi in giro per varie cene con i suoi colleghi scrittori, oltre a darmi un sacco di consigli per il proseguo dei miei viaggi in Asia. Consigli preziosi che mi hanno anche aperto le porte per collaborazioni anche con alcuni quotidiani italiani. 

Anni dopo, ho avuto la fortuna di essere suo ospite a Voghera e di conoscere i suoi meravigliosi genitori che mi hanno accolto subito come se fossi uno di famiglia. Per quanto le storie di Marco siano sempre piene di avvenimenti ai limiti dell’incredibile, questa volta ho fatto fatica a credere alle sue parole quando ho letto della tragedia che gli è capitata per colpa di questo maledetto coronavirus. Entrambi i suoi genitori sono morti, uccisi dal virus, mentre Marco stava lavorando al suo primo libro guida in Sud America, nel sud del Peru'. Marco li ha persi cosi', al telefono, mentre il paese si chiudeva in uno stretto lock  down il 16 Marzo. Purtroppo, Marco e' ancora bloccato a Cabanaconde, da cui uscire e' impresa piuttosto ardua. La cosa buona e' che, sia lui che sua moglie Kit Yeng, stanno al sicuro e stanno bene.

Appena mi sono ripreso dallo shock iniziale ho pensato che era arrivato il momento di sdebitarmi per tutte le gentilezze che Marco mi ha fatto nel corso degli anni. Ho deciso dunque di creare questo crowdfunding perché sono sicuro di non essere l’unico in debito con Marco -- sia stato  per un’ospitalità, delle dritte di viaggio, qualche ora di entusiasmante lettura, o anche solo il suo essere un modello per tutti coloro che non si rassegnano a vivere una vita preconfezionata e hanno il coraggio di seguire le proprie passioni che, nel suo caso, lo portano nei quattro angoli del pianeta.

Questo fundrising servira' per garantire a Marco e alla sua moglie fotografa Kit Yeng il supporto necessario per pagare le spese di vitto e alloggio in quarantena in Peru', biglietti aerei per rientrare in Italia a dare una decente cerimonia funeraria per i suoi genitori, e rimandarlo poi a casa a Penang, in Malesia, dopo un necessaro soggiorno in Italia. Diamogli una mano tutti assieme, anche solo con i soldi di una colazione al bar che, comunque, ora non potreste concedervi. Let’s bring our guys back home.
