Hi, my name is Joon and I'm fundraising for my little brother Woo.
In June 2021, Woo came to me with concerns over a bump under his armpit. We went to urgent care together and was told it was an infected cyst that he needed drained. We went to the hospital that same day where the doctor performed minor surgery to find there was no cyst. It was believed to be a swollen lymph node that would go down on its own with antibiotics.
July 2021
Weeks went by as the infection under his armpit spread. Woo was told that it was cellulitis and to keep taking the antibiotics until it started to disappear. The infection kept spreading and the medications didn't help and we urged him to go to the ER, where he spent 7 days. The infection kept spreading and towards the end of his stay, a scan revealed a new growth under his infection that he needed surgery to remove. He was eventually released and the growth was sent for a biopsy. Later that week, we found out he had none of the things previously said and through the biopsy, he was diagnosed with Stage 2 Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The specific type of lymphoma he has, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, is rare.
August 2021/Now
Woo is currently going through many tests as he gets ready for chemotherapy and radiation starting 8/25:
- A PET scan has revealed that the cancer has spread to his hip and spine.
- Surgery to check that the cancer hasn't spread to his bone marrow (Cleared)
- An echocardiogram to make sure his heart is healthy for chemo (Cleared)
- He has experienced some issues with vision and hearing so he has to get an MRI to make sure the cancer isn't attacking his nervous system
- Meeting with a specialist at Northwestern to see if he is eligible for a treatment that helps make sure the cancer doesn't come back
Woo recently got a new job but his insurance started in August. All the care he got in June and July are out of pocket. Fortunately through some financial assistance, much of his ER services were covered but there are some bills that remain and more costs going forward.
Your donation will help us cover
- The bills we have so far
- Help him with his deductible/out of pocket costs
- Continued care and treatment
