What happened?
On Easter Sunday (21st April 2019), terrorists rocked the beautiful island nation of Sri Lanka to its core through a series of coordinated bomb blasts across prominent churches and hotels in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaola. Around 250 innocent people (including 45 children) have died with another 400-500 estimated to be severely injured by this senseless and barbaric act.
Who we are?
We are a social enterprise named AASHA based in Galle, Sri Lanka. We run projects in education (women's empowerment, childcare), healthcare and animal conservation (sea turtles, dog care and elephant conservation). We work with some amazing organisations across the globe who send volunteers to us to participate in the above projects that make a real difference to the lives of the communities we serve.
What we plan to do
We need your help to raise money to directly help the women and children that have been most affected by this tragedy. Many children have lost parents and been orphaned, and similarly, several women have lost their husbands or children in these attacks. They face an unimaginable and uphill future. While the void created by the loss of their nearest and dearest ones will never truly be filled, we need your assistance to help ease their pain during this dark period in their lives.
To make the most effective impact, we plan to focus our donations to the Katuwapitiya community in Negombo where the St. Sebastian’s Church was attacked. This is a poor community that lost over 150 lives, where several dozens of women and children need our help.
As the needs are constantly changing on the ground, it is difficult to provide an exact list of items we plan to purchase from the proceeds collected, but broadly speaking, we plan to buy medicine, clothes, educational materials and household products to help these people. Being a local organisation, we plan to do all of this by ourselves and make the donations in person without relying on any third party for risk of leakage. We will be 100% transparent and account for each and every penny spent for these items, which will be published on this forum. We are in contact with the St. Sebastian's church to identify the women and children most in need.
