Help Wizard walk again
Donation protected
On Saturday 8th of March a nice evening beach walk turned into a nightmare, Wizard had a freak accident, running straight for his ball his legs gave way, sending him tumbling to the ground, screaming in pain, he lay there paralysed, from the chest down. I thought I was going to loose him that day, after everything we’ve been through… the trip to emergency vets in Dundee felt like it took forever.
He stayed overnight and I had to take him to Edinburgh Royal dick vet hospital for small animals on Sunday morning. He had an MRI scan which showed his spinal cord had been damaged by a disc, which (by luck?) had shot into his cord and out again - (luckily) no fractures of the vertebrae, meaning surgery was not needed.
mixed emotions- and lots of questions… will he be able to walk again? Will he be in pain? Will he have a quality of life? Will he be incontinent?
No one could answer at this point, it was up to him, the next 48 hours were critical.
But of course in true Wizard style he proved he is not ready to give up on life, it’s too much fun! He stayed 6 days in Edinburgh hospital, where he showed slight signs of improvement, he developed deep pain response from his back toes (a very good sign)
I picked him up on Friday 14th March, no wagging tail, no control of his bladder, and no use of his legs.
The Staff showed me how to express his bladder, & some physio exercises….
It is going to be a long slow road to recovery…
fast forward 3 weeks - Wizard continues to show us all that he is a strong fighter, he is getting strength in his legs, and with lots of massages, physiotherapy, rest and time he WILL walk again, I am as determined as he is :)
I have had a few requests to set up a gofund me page to help with his recovery.
Wizard is insured for £6000 (when I took this out 5 years ago vet fees were nowhere near as extreme as they are nowadays) you just don’t ever expect something like this to happen - Wizard is a super fit dog, never been ‘sick’ but seems to be a boy for freak accidents.
So far his Vet fees are sitting at roughly £5500
although I have not had the final invoice from Edinburgh yet (he has a check up appointment on Thursday 10th April) his initial fee was approximately £3500 for the MRI, pain relief & stay for 6 days.
the emergency vet fee was £1669.62 which the insurance has agreed to pay £1091.99
lots of fees were not covered, such as out of hours treatment! Administration fees etc (see picture of breakdown of costs)
Money is tight (to say the least) since Wizards life saving operations last year. I work hard & try my best, working two jobs all for this boy lol.
Wizard has so much love to give, he greets everyone like a long lost friend, and his love for life and joy is contagious.
I know money is tight for everyone as the cost of living increases every month, if you can spare a few pounds to help with recovery costs, if not please share (that’s free to do :) )
every penny raised will go towards Wizard, which will be costly - Physiotherapy session, massages, hydrotherapy (once he is able).
every penny will be accounted for and I will update regularly.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us in this journey so far, donating puppy pads and duvets to keep him comfortable, chews to keep him busy, messages to ask how he is ❤️ It means the world to me that Wizard is so loved by everyone.
