Troy Hamel was the most amazing husband, father, brother, son and friend. He was a friend to all and a father figure to many. When he passed a huge hole was left in the hearts of his family and so many friends as well. The pain of his loss is immeasurable, but having to endure this pain is worth the many years we had together. Troy was my boyfriend at Bunker Junior High School but we broke up, then again at Muskegon High School but we broke up again. After that our lives went in different directions. About 10 years later we found each other again. Our joke had been it is either 3 times a charm or 3 strikes you're out, and we're still trying to figure it out. Truth be told, I figured it out long ago and knew it was 3 times a charm.
Troy and I have 2 daughters, Becca who is 24 and Lizzie who is soon to be 21. They had him wrapped around their fingers from the moment they were born. He would have done anything for them, including wearing toe nail polish on a couple of occasions. I believe he fought so hard through his long hospitalization last summer just to be with them again and make sure they were ok. That was just Troy's nature, taking care of others.
Troy underwent 2 open heart surgeries. The most recent on 06/24/2020 after which he had a very difficult post-operative course with 81 days in ICU and 105 days in the hospital. Troy has spent half of the last 10 months in the hospital. Troy kept smiling through it all. I am unable to count the number of times a doctor, nurse, or any caregiver said to me "Troy is my favorite patient", "He always has a smile on his face", or "I love his smile".
The unfortunate reality of Troy's health problems is that he was unable to have life insurance and our family needs help paying for his final expenses. This last year has been a huge financial struggle with the increased medical and travel expenses, my working less to be able to be at the hospital and doctor appointments with Troy and now funeral expenses. We greatly appreciate any help you are able to give us. If not financially then prayers, good thoughts, happy memories are also so welcomed.
