Hello family and friends,
James and Skye Walz have recently been dealt a tough medical battle and James is needing your prayers and support. In early January, James started experiencing some shortness of breath that worsened throughout the month. They decided to go to the doctor in early February and he was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. This occurs when the heart has an irregular heartbeat and causes the heart to beat too fast. He was put on heart medications at that time and was scheduled to see a Cardiologist in Bismarck. He met with the Cardiologist on Tuesday, February 15th. At that time, the doctor tried shocking his heart four times to get it back into normal rhythm, but it did not work. His heart muscle is very weak, so they decided it was best to admit him to be monitored. He had an ultrasound of the heart that found his heart was pumping too slow. On 2/17/22, he was admitted to the ICU after they placed a heart catheter and Impella pump, which will help the heart pump more efficiently. After being closely monitored, the medical team decided this morning (2/18/22) that it was best to transfer James to the University of Minnesota. His heart was pumping only at 10% of normal and his right leg wasn't getting any blood flow. He was in pain and very restless, so they decided to put him on a ventilator and sedate him to allow his body to rest. He is also on a high dose of heparin as they want his blood as thin as possible, so it doesn't clot the machine. James did test positive for Covid, but the doctor is still unsure of what caused the arrhythmia. The ICU nurse told Skye that he is critically ill, but stable. Thankfully, the University of Minnesota was able to find a bed and he was airlifted to the UofM early this morning. The flight team did not think it was safe for Skye to go along, so her and Gynell will be flying out first thing in the morning. James will more than likely have a long road to recovery. Let's rally together to help James and Skye navigate this process.
