Help with Tilly's surgery after accident
Donation protected
In June, our dog Tilly injured her paw pretty badly after a fall from a second-story window. She was lucky to survive (and we are very grateful for that!), but she ended up with carpal hyperextension, which is caused by damage to the ligaments that stabilize a dog's ankle. Tilly had carpal arthrodesis joint fusion surgery in July. The surgeon stabilized her joint with metal plates and screws and also did a bone graft to encourage new bone growth. The cost for the procedure with a specialist vet was about $6000.
The surgery went well, but the recovery has not gone as expected. Tilly has had periods of improvement where it seemed like she would be able to walk normally, but over the past few months she has had more and more trouble walking. Since mid-October, she has not been using the left front paw at all, and has instead started walking on three legs. The vet has done two sets of x-rays and has not found any infections or abnormalities. The bones seem to be healing well.
When we asked about options, we were told that there aren't very many things left to do and we might need to consider amputation. According to the vet, the only other option is a surgery to remove the plates and screws from her ankle and see if she's more comfortable and able to walk better. We are moving forward with this second surgery, which will cost approximately $2800, in hopes that she will see improvement and be able to use her front leg. The costs have really added up and we would greatly appreciate any help (however small) you might be able to provide.
We love Tilly and just want her to live her best life chasing balls and squirrels. Thank you so much for reading!
