My name is Dan Moore and I've been entrusted with the care and feeding of "The Dude," who was left hidden and abandoned in a privacy-fenced backyard, for a week, with only a tent top for protection before a wonderful neighbor discovered him and posted on NextDoor. He lived in that backyard fulltime, being repeatedly bred with 2 females, and as far as we know, never even had a name. "Dude" just seems to have stuck, so that's going to be his name, at least for now. When his captors moved, they took the 2 females and left this big, sweet, beautiful boy behind. I'm really proud of the way our local community came together on this.

I picked Dude up late in the afternoon on Friday, June 16, 2023 and we had our first Vet visit Monday, Juneteenth, 2023 at Cordova Station Animal Hospital, 989 N. Germantown Parkway, Cordova TN 38018, telephone (901) [phone redacted]. His longterm prognosis is good, but not great. The big, ugly wounds on his legs are basically bedsores, from laying in one spot. They were then relentlessly attacked by fleas and flies. He laid in one spot because he was so weak from all the parasites and then the starvation. He has heartworms, hookworms, AND whipworms to go along with the worst flea infestation I've ever seen. He also has some weird bacterial thing on his feet. The heartworms are severe enough (12-13 adult worms in his heart) that he has fairly significant heart and lung damage.

At the first visit, Dude got his first dose of dewormer for the hookworms and whipworms and I have the next 6 doses on hand. He also got a huge dose of antibiotics and this new "wonder drug" for fleas. And they of course took blood and stool samples. What he didn't get were any vaccinations, heartworm treatment, or even a microchip. Dude is so weak from the parasites, the Vet said the shots would probably kill him for sure and even the very minor "trauma" of chipping him could set off a chain of events and reactions that could also kill him. Dude's in rough shape.

Our next appointment is Monday, July 17th. The vet was pretty confident that Dude would be strong enough by then for his shots, a chip, and to start the "slow kill" method of heartworm treatment. It's going to be a long road for Dude, but we'll get through it. The vet said his heart and lungs will recover some, but never be 100%, like when a long-time smoker quits. He also said the wounds will heal but the scars probably won't. That skin is just too horribly damaged to ever heal. The vet "guesstimated" that Dude would be as healthy as he's ever going to be again in about a year, at a cost of around $1,500 more dollars. I've already spent $1,000, and had to put that on a credit card, so I hope to raise $2,500.
Dude is the sweetest, most gentle boy in the world. He deserves better and he's going to get it, no matter what. I've instructed him to get better. Let us all hope and/or pray that "The Dude abides..."
