Help with the cost of Luna’s liver shunt surgery

Hey Everyone,
This is Luna, our sweet and beautiful 5 month old Yorkie. Luna came into our lives when we lost our other dog after fighting liver disease. On Sunday, April 23rd, I got up at 6am to take Luna for a pee. When I went to her crate and opened it, she had trouble coming out. She came out all 4 paws on the ground like a seal and was peeing herself. She ran to a corner and started circling the room against the wall and then stopping in a corner and just digging like there’s no tomorrow. When I picked her up, it was like she was completely spaced out. I rushed her to the vet emergency hospital. Her symptoms mimicked those of either liver shunt, toxicity, brain tumour, meningitis or neck injury. They had no clue what was going on with her. Full bloodwork and X-rays all came back normal. When I asked the vet to test her for Lyme disease, they said it was rare for those symptoms but they would test her as they had no idea what was going on with her. An hour later, the vet told me that she tested negative for Lyme disease but tested positive for anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis. They told me she had got bitten by a tick when she was still with the breeder.
24hr of being in the hospital, with fluids and antibiotics, she was feeling better and came home.
As the days went on, we noticed that she wasn’t gaining any weight or muscle mass and she started becoming weaker. On May 3rd I took her to the vet. The vet was a little concerned as well and we decided to put her on high calorie diet to help get some weight on her. When we fed her the food, it upset her belly and I thought that was strange as the food wasn’t supposed to bother her. On May the 4 I took her back to the vet. Our vet was more concerned as the food she was given wasn’t supposed to upset her stomach. We decided to do a liver function test just to be safe. Tuesday, May 9th was her test date and unfortunately we didn’t get the news we were hoping for. Luna was diagnosed with a liver shunt. A liver shunt occurs when an abnormal connection persists or forms between the portal vein or one of its branches, and another vein, allowing blood to bypass, or shunt, around the liver. In order for Luna to live a long a healthy life, she needs surgery to fix this as it will not heal on its own. We will need to travel to another province (PEI) in order to have the surgery done. Cost of testing and surgery is between $7000-$12000. We did insure Luna through Trupanion on April 23rd, however, they have denied our claim stating this was a pre-existing condition and will not cover it. Even though she wasn’t diagnosed on the 23rd, her urine showed crystallization and this claim was denied.
Luna came to us sick already and we didn’t even know it. We love her so much and will do everything we can to help her. Both my husband and I are self-employed who poured our heart and soul into a new business 6 months ago. We don’t have a set income. We were really counting on insurance to help us pay for it but unfortunately they won’t. We need help with the cost of the surgery. Anything you can donate is deeply appreciated. Please help us save little Luna’s life. She deserves a full, happy and healthy life.
