Snort developed some swelling over his left eye around January 7th 2020. 9 years ago, he had an infection in his right sinus area that resulted in surgery to remove the infected bone and tissue, and I was sure I could expect the same this time around. After a round of antibiotics that didn’t help, my vet took radiographs and an FNA (fine needle aspiration) to collect a tissue sample from the mass above his eye. His x-rays showed an abnormality above his left eye, which a radiologist confirmed was cancer on January 22nd. On January 26th, a pathologist determined in their cytology report (based on the cells shown in his tissue sample) that the cancer is most likely squamous cell carcinoma. We have been referred to an oncologist in Calgary, AB who will discuss everything with us (his cancer, possible treatment and care, life expectancy etc. )
My vet has said that this could just be palliative care, depending on how advanced or aggressive his cancer is, but this is all something we have to wait for the oncologist to tell us. Regardless of the level of care, this will come with additional costs on top of the consultation fee with the specialist as well as money already spent on diagnosis. This could include further imaging, medication or procedures, but I don't know "what's next" or what the right decisions are until each appointment.
Any help is SO appreciated - Snort has been a huge support to me when I felt my lowest and he continues to bring me peace when I'm feeling anxious and overwhelmed. As long as he's eating, playing and being his naughty self, I have to continue to fight for his health.
