As we know Ryan is on felony probation for distribution of cocaine. He has a 10 year suspended sentence over his head if he violates probation. Ryan had a very tough upbringing. He has had multiple close friends commit suicide. His favorite uncle Justin died which was really hard on him. 3 years later on the anniversary of Justin's death, Ryan's closest friend had died in an alleged suicide. He had to live through our parents messy divorce resulting in a lack of a solid father figure which he desperately needed. Ryan is a great kid with the purest heart, but through countless trauma he has suffered throughout his life he has his own demons that he struggles with every single day. Hence his apparent substance abuse problem.
After Ryan got out of jail he was absolutely thriving living completely sober and was obeyed all laws and even attended NA meetings to help him in his quest for sobriety. Within the first week of his release he obtained a job at Uncle Julio's as a server making excellent money. He was sober. He was happy. He was surrounded by loved ones once again.
Then covid hit. It affected him hard. He lost his job due to the shutdown and after a bad breakup he was secluded all alone in his apartment, sad, scared, and unsure where he was going to come up with money to pay rent and food. That didn't stop him from wanting to live his best life. He began doing everything he could to make money where he could. He mowed lawns, raked leaves, trimmed hedges, anything to help him get by. He finally decided to join the front line of essential workers and obtained a job at Walmart, where once again he was thriving. He was working near 80 hour work weeks to make enough to support himself but at least he was still sober and happy and safe. After about 3 weeks at Walmart, his background check came back listing him as a felon, causing him to lose his job. Once again he was pushed back into a wall of despair. Unfortunately this time, he wasn't able to keep a positive attitude or outlook. He was starting to spiral downward mentally when I (his brother) stepped in and got him to agree to work on himself and his mental health. The plan was to move out of his current situation (surrounded by bad influences) and come live on my couch for a few weeks while he worked on improving his horrible mental state, and then to proceed on to an inpatient rehab facility to keep him on the straightened arrow.
He got arrested on his way to come live with me for a possession charge which resulted in a probation violation. He is currently being held with no bond.
After many conversations with many lawyers we determined the best route to take would be to hire a lawyer to file a motion that would allow Ryan to seek immediate treatment at an intensive impatient rehab facility where he would stay from anywhere from 3 to 6 months. Once he finishes his treatment (that he was seeking all along), he will have a final sentencing date where the judge will determine how much time Ryan will have to serve out of the 10 years he has over his head. Hiring a top tier attorney is his best shot at getting him the real help that he needs before he has to face the music.
Ryan is an amazing kid with an amazing heart. I know he deep down want's to get treatment and live happily in sobriety. He does NOT deserve to spend the entirety of his 20's behind bars due to something that is classified as a medical condition.
His case is extremely complicated but we are attempting to raise money (as our parents can not afford to contribute more than the cost of the rehab center) to get him the best representation possible. So he can cure his illness and come home to us once again. If you care about Ryan and believe he should get treatment over jail time, if you believe the war on drugs is a violation of our civil rights; I humbly ask you to donate whatever you can afford to give in order to help us actually rehabilitate our sick brother, son, and friend.
