I'll put the tl;dr part up front: We need money for rent and health because of a series of events that are absurd.
Now the long story: A couple of years back, because of a reckless driver, my husband lost his job. The driver--a NJ corrections officer--was driving well over the speed limit and crashed into my husband's boss's car. Not only did that crash take a wonderful man's life, but it took the businesses that man was running, and ruined the livelihoods of all the people he employed. Including my husband's.
Greg, my husband, has some medical issues that make it difficult for him to work. Since that wreck that caused a lot of damage both fatally and emotionally, he's tried to rebuild the business he once had. The other employees have banded together to keep that business going, and have helped Greg as much as they can but it isn't enough. Greg, a driving instructor, has to negotiate a lot more red tape than most people to maintain his status and to ensure those he teaches get legit lessons.
I work full-time, but I don't make enough to pay the rent and basic living expenses. We've had help from our family to get us through all the hurdles set up by the NY DMV and state regulations we anticipated while Greg gets his own business set up. We knew it would take a while but didn't know it would take this long. So we've exhausted our own resources and the resources of our family.
The kicker is that last week, because of a technical error, Greg was told his car--the one he uses to eek out as many lessons as he can, informally--is not properly registered and has been impounded. The mistake comes from a lapse in insurance payments last March, which was corrected with the insurance company but apparently not with the state of New York, who didn't get, as they say, the memo. We can't afford to pay for the process to correct New York's mistake (and a bit our mistake, but even the insurance company acknowledges he is in good standing). So: help, I guess. I hate to ask. Not only do we need to pay up on our rent, but we need help getting Greg back up--finally--to what he genuinely and inexplicably loves doing: teaching people to drive. He is very close to getting the business certified and to being steadily employed. And for us to be back to economic stability. We just need a little help. Thanks in advance.
