PJ was on dialysis for 8 years, bravely facing each day with strength and kindness. On January 21st, bad weather kept him from his dialysis appointment, and he also missed his emergency medication. The next morning, we went out for groceries as usual, and when we returned, he said he was tired and wanted to take a nap. This was nothing out of the ordinary for him. I had to run a quick errand, and when I got home, I found him sitting on the side of the bed, struggling to breathe and asking me to call an ambulance. He told me he felt like he was drowning and knew he had fluid overload. I called 911 and within 30 minutes, he was on his way to the hospital 30 miles away. Tragically, he coded just as they arrived and the hospital staff were unable to resuscitate him. PJ was the kind of man who would give anyone the shirt off his back if they needed it. He was generous, loving, and always put others before himself. Now, I am facing the difficult task of arranging his funeral, with expenses that must be paid by the time of his service on Saturday, the 31st of January, which would have been his 57th birthday.
