Hi everyone!

My name is Rita, I'm 32 years old and recently received the life-changing diagnosis of invasive breast cancer, confirmed to be HER2-positive and hormone receptor-positive — a type that needs to be treated aggressively and without delay.

Despite the shock, I'm staying strong and hopeful. I was lucky to detect the tumor early while it’s still localized and highly treatable — but to stay ahead of it, I need immediate surgery, followed by targeted therapy and possibly chemotherapy. Time is crucial.

Unfortunately, like so many in Portugal, I'm facing barriers in the public healthcare system, where wait times for essential treatments can stretch into weeks or months. I’ve had to turn to private healthcare to get faster diagnostics, consultations, and now potentially the surgery itself.

Why I'm asking for help

Even with insurance, the costs are overwhelming. Some treatments and exams aren't covered, and others are delayed by complex approval processes. My surgery — the next urgent step — may need to be paid out of pocket to avoid losing precious time.

At the same time, my husband and I are doing our best to care for our little family, which includes our beloved pets, who also have health conditions that require attention and love.

This journey is being incredibly hard emotionally and financially — but I’m not giving up. I just need a bit of help to keep going, and to give myself the best chance to heal.

Olá a todos!

O meu nome é Rita, tenho 32 anos e recebi recentemente o diagnóstico que mudou a minha vida: carcinoma mamário invasivo, confirmado como HER2 positivo e com receptores hormonais positivos — um tipo que exige tratamento urgente e intenso.

Apesar do choque, estou a manter-me forte e positiva. Felizmente, detectei o tumor num estágio precoce, ainda localizado e com boas hipóteses de cura — mas para vencer esta luta, preciso de cirurgia imediata, seguida de terapias direcionadas e possivelmente quimioterapia. O tempo é crucial.

Por que preciso da vossa ajuda:

Infelizmente, o sistema de saúde público tem tempos de espera muito longos, o que me forçou a procurar cuidados no sistema privado — desde os exames iniciais até agora, com a cirurgia iminente.

Mesmo com seguro, os custos têm sido elevados. Muitos exames e tratamentos não são comparticipados, ou demoram a ser aprovados. A minha cirurgia — o próximo passo urgente — poderá ter de ser paga do meu bolso, para não atrasar o tratamento.

Ao mesmo tempo, eu e o meu marido fazemos o possível para cuidar da nossa pequena família, incluindo os nossos animais de estimação, que também têm problemas de saúde e precisam de atenção e carinho.

Este caminho tem sido difícil, emocional e financeiramente — mas não vou desistir. Só preciso de um pouco de ajuda para continuar e ter a melhor hipótese de cura.
