"How is someone supposed to heal with the nightmare of medical bills hanging over their head?"
-Molly Mengis
Life time resident of The Dalles, Molly Mengis is in the fight for her life. Literally.
The opponent is urethral clear cell carcinoma - an incredibly rare form of cancer. So rare, only 40 cases have been documented worldwide since 1951!
Molly, a single mother of two daughters, was diagnosed in February this year. Because this cancer is so rare she's had to travel to see specialists at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle on a regular basis for treatments and surgeries.
On March 26th she underwent a 12-hour surgery that resulted in the removal of a cancerous tumor and other organs in addition to bladder reconstruction. Post surgery hospital stay was extended by nearly three weeks due to complications and infections. After extensive pathology reports the doctors told Molly the cancer had metastasized to her lymphatic system. Once she heals from surgery, she will begin a year long regimen of immunotherapy.
This is not her first rodeo. It took years of pain and several surgeries before Molly received this final diagnosis. She endured countless visits to the emergency room with infections. In addition, she underwent two surgeries to remove unwanted pockets along the inside of the urethra.
Molly is a beloved member of The Dalles community and now needs your support. She's the person who pitches in to help but not one to easily ask for it. She's fearlessly raised two amazing young women - Sammy Minnick, 23, who's a nurse in Salem and Abby Minnick, 21, a senior at Oregon State University. Molly is a dedicated dental hygienist who has volunteered with the Northwest Medical Team in Romania to clean teeth and teach oral hygiene at children's orphanages.
Molly's specialists are in Washington state, which is out of her insurance network, so treatment and surgeries have not been covered. Your donations will make an impact and go directly to medical bills. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.
In the end, when one of our community members is suffering, many are affected. So let's rise together to help her. By making donation to Molly, you'll be making a ripple effect of positivity in this community. Thank you for your generosity.
