Help with Medical Expenses for Rescue Dogs
Donation protected
Hi everyone! My name is Nikki, and I'm trying to raise money for the medical expenses of 3 dogs rescues from Palmdale, CA late December 2023.
The rescue that I was working with to be the front runner for pulling them was to collect pledges but they have not released any pledges and have actually ghosted me since January 19, 2024.
About the three dogs:
These dogs were in the shelter for about 3 weeks. They all had confirmed mange (scabies), and the two German Shepherds were intact and were not able to be fixed by the shelter from being underweight. Once I received them and had them checked out, it was discovered both German Shepherds had ear infections, and the Husky had worms. All had lost weight from their intake at the shelter, 10, 20, and almost 30 pounds...just within the 3 weeks! So we started with medicated baths and a meal regime to help put the weight back on.
The female GSD also has severe separation anxiety and cannot handle being crated. With the mange, she was forced into this because we couldn't risk infecting anyone else in the house. Part of her self soothing was to eat her tail and she got it down to the bone.
We did a tip amputation to try and save her tail since this wasn't a cause of happy tail and we put her on generic Prozac as neither Benadryl or tranquilizers affect her. Sadly, she kept breaking the cone trying to escape the room she was in (she broke 2 crates so we upgraded to a full room), and the broken tip of the cone snagged the tip of her tail and ripped it off. So another tail amputation was needed, this time leaving her with a small portion of her tail left.
The other item that needed to be handled was when I originally saw the trio, it said they were bonded and non aggressive. When I spoke with the shelter and the rescue, I said I wanted the bonded trio and it would be a great fit with my household of cats since all cats have been fine with dogs, the dogs were bonded, and the dogs were nonaggressive... so everything should work out.
But it turns out the Husky is aggressive towards all animals...including the two dogs he was supposed to be bonded with! He is fantastic with people, but since the household now had 6 other animals, it clearly was not a good match. I immediately (within a week of receiving the trio) contacted the rescue to inform them of the issue and there was no relief or help from the rescue...who specializes in huskies of all breeds.
I contacted over 100 rescues and shelters in Ohio and neighboring states to try and rehome the Husky. All turned me down due to overcrowding or unable to take owner surrenders from being out of county but roughly a month later, Humane Society of Madison County reached out and said they could help. It was an unusual situation as most shelters are closed county in Ohio, meaning they will only accept animals from their county, but the Human Society of Madison County allowed me to do an owner surrender.

and Moby's petfinder page (Half off adoption during March!!) https://www.petfinder.com/dog/moby-70647800/oh/west-jefferson/humane-society-of-madison-county-oh36/
And consider adopting him and/or donating to the shelter. While the shelter isn't the best place, he was forced to stay in a crate at my house so this is a better situation for him. Death row, to crate, to open shelter, next stop forever home!
Fast forward to today:
I have made several Facebook Marketplace posts to sell items to help raise money for the dogs, especially the surgeries. There have been several people that were so amazing they donated more than the cost of the item or even just donated money to help out. Several of them mentioned setting up a gofundme, so here we are!
Moby (male Husky) was cleared of mange and worms. He was easily able to gain back the 10 pounds he needed. He is awaiting his forever home!
Rocky (male GSD) has been cleared of mange, ear infection, and neutered. He is currently enrolled in classes to help him with basic commands and to help him with other animals. He's very friendly but is too hyped up when meeting people/animals. He's put on the 20 pounds he needed and is currently at the healthy correct weight.
Maple (female GSD) has been cleared of mange, ear infection, spayed, and tail is healing nicely. She has put on about 30 pounds and still needs a little more. She's also enrolled in class to help her socialize, she's also smart enough to know commands and know she doesn't have to follow them - dangerous combo! Good thing she's the sweetest dog you could ask for aside from being a trash goblin.
All proceeds are strictly to help the dogs. Part of the donations will also go to Humane Society of Madison County as they really, really, really helped my household and I will forever recommend them and be grateful to them.
I would like to thank everyone that has already donated, it truly means a lot.
