Help with medical costs for Chuck Lucas

For those who know Chuck Lucas, you will remember that in 2014, he was diagnosed with sensorimotor polyneuropathy, an incurable debilitating nerve disorder which wound up costing him his health, mobility and his law career. He was living a life of massive doses of morphine, but during a trip to Costa Rica in early 2018, it was discovered that his symptoms virtually disappeared. Thus, mid-2018, he moved to Costa Rica and his sweet bride Mary began the process of following him there. For roughly a year and a half, Chuck enjoyed a 95% respite from that disease. Unfortunately, God had other plans and in November of 2020 he was diagnosed with Stage 3 gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma, a tumorous cancer blocking more than 75% of his esophagus with spreading to various lymph nodes. Since December of 2020, he has been undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy in a clinical trial. Things were looking somewhat promising until recently, when his health once again took a nosedive.
You’ll remember Chuck as a large man. Unfortunately, he is unable to keep food down and now weighs 145 pounds on his 6’2” frame. Because of fatigue and nausea, he sleeps 16-18 hours per day and is once again on heavy doses of Fentanyl and morphine in an attempt to control the pain.
His medications and travel expenses for the clinical trial (13 hour round trip every 3 weeks) have been costly and many of them have not been covered. Sadly, Chuck now remains at home in Costa Rica receiving palliative care which currently includes pain management and increasing hospice care. As these services continue to increase, so will their additional out of pocket expenses.
As Chuck and Mary’s friends, we have set up this go fund me account to help reduce their financial burden and to show our love and support for them in a tangible way. We know many of you have been touched by their love and generosity over the years and might want the opportunity to support them in their time of need. Your prayers are also greatly needed and appreciated.
