Hello! My name is Karri Williams, my dad is Derek (Todd) Williams.
My dad went and had weight loss surgery on August 30th, to better his life and health. Shortly after, on September 8th, he started experiencing symptoms that wasn’t normal so an ambulance brought him to Baptist Hospital in Beaumont Texas. Where he has been since then. He has since then had a total of 5 surgeries, and still needing a final surgery. A little run down on what has happened, we sat in the ER from around 4pm September 8th to about 5;30pm September 9th. My dad was in excruciating pain, vomiting blood, pooping blood, having very little and dark colored urine and very sick feeling. They gave him pain meds over and over again. Did an CT and said his bowel was inflamed and swollen. They sent a bariatric surgeon in and he said there is nothing emergent and he did not need surgery then left. Once he was upstairs my brother stayed the night with him. All the same things were happening until the next morning he ended up loosing so much blood in his stool he lost consciousness, luckily my brother was right there to catch him before he hit the floor. They then decided they needed to bring him into surgery. When they did they seen he had dead bowel. They removed 240 cm of small intestines. They left him open for the remainder of the day and night and the next day they went back in removed 10 more cm and closed him back up all connected properly. He was in the ICU then. He was doing well from the 13th to the 16th of September. On the 16th they seen fecal matter in his drains and brought him back into surgery. They had to remove 10 more cm of bowl and left him unconnected for the remainder of the day/ night. Had surgery again on the 18th to reconnect the bowel, they connected it sent him back to the ICU. During all this he had to be on blood pressure medication to keep his blood pressure up, antibiotics bc his white blood count was so high, fluids, and sedation medication. His kidneys had also started to fail through all this. On September 21st they told us his body was acidotic, his drains didn’t look good, and they wanted to take him back into surgery. They took him back once again and was not able to reconnect his bowel anymore. They said he has about 80cm left of bowel. They left 4 drains in his belly. Going through the stomach and intestines and all that. To drain everything. He has not had anything to drink or eat in a month. He isn’t aloud to. They have been feeding him TPN through the iv. Which isn’t good for his liver so it has made his liver enzymes high. On the 22nd they started him doing dialysis, to pull fluid off him and help his kidneys. The surgeon told us as long as he is on the blood pressure medication his belly would not heal. They were able to take him off of it on the 24th of September, he has been off of it since then. They noticed a wound on the 15th, that has since then got SO much worse. He also has a wound on each leg. They tested them on the 29th and it showed MRSA. He was in ICU until October 3rd, then they decided he was stable enough to move to the normal floor. The surgeon had come by on October 4th and said 6-8 more weeks and he would evaluate him to see if he could go back into surgery to finish and connect his bowel again. Since then he has decided he does not want to do the surgery. He needs to have a small bowel replacement done. But bc he doesn’t have insurance he can’t get transferred out of Baptist. They told us yesterday October 14th, they want to send him home to hospice. Mind you they still haven’t worked with him getting up so he doesn’t have the strength still to fully get out of bed. He still has stables and drains from his belly. We are trying to raise as much money as we can to find better care for him. They have not given him the care that he needs or deserves. We are up there with him everyday. We have seen first hand what they do up there. If you have read this far we appreciate it so much. Any and all help we can get is very much appreciated. Our family thanks each and everyone who cares, prays, donates, everything. If you don’t mind please share to help us! God bless.
