A family devastated by a health care crisis
Marv and Brenda Hayes moved to the Pequot Lakes area, building their home, and hoping to retire in a few years. Brenda found work as office manager at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Crosby. Marv found employment at FedEx in Brainerd. This past August they went to Sturgis, SD to participate in the annual bike rally held there. This is when his illness began.
Marv began to feel ill with extreme stomach pain, weakness and muscle spasms. Upon their return Marv sought medical attention and was diagnosed with a bladder infection. The following day an ambulance was dispatched to their home and he was taken to the ER with hospital admittance for a week. A blood infection was found and he was transferred to Abbott Hospital in the Twin Cities. Since then he has been on heavy antibiotics, had his heart defibrillator removed, incurred lower back pains. In spite of these efforts he had to be readmitted to Abbott for another bout of infection for two additional weeks.
He is back home, on another course of antibiotics for 6 more weeks, wearing a back brace and a life vest (due to the defibrillator being removed) he is scheduled to have his defibrillator replaced.
The bad news is that their limited insurance coverage only extends to the hospital stays. All other expenses ( ambulances, doctors, medications, medical tests, the life vest until the defibrillator replaced, all misc expenses associated with travel) are not covered; it is their burden to bear.
