Ok friends, so here goes nothing. As I sit here composing this, I feel a mix of shame and hope, because reaching out for help is the hardest thing I’ve had to do in my 48 years. A little over three months ago, I completely shattered my foot—three of the five bones snapped in half and were facing the wrong way. I’ve had pain in my foot for a long time, but several weeks ago it swelled up so badly I couldn’t stand on it. My wife insisted I see an orthopedic doctor, and that’s when I learned I have Charcot foot, a complication from diabetes and neuropathy so severe I didn’t even realize how badly it was broken.

Since then, I’ve been ordered to stay in bed with zero weight bearing, unable to drive or work. This has been devastating, not just physically but emotionally and financially. I’ve been out of work with no pay, as my company doesn’t offer short-term disability. The weight of this situation is heavy on my wife and me—we’re falling behind on our home, vehicles, and utilities, and I’m scared for our future. There’s a real risk I may need surgery, and because of my diabetes, there’s a chance of infection or even losing my foot.

I know times are tough for everyone, and I’m not asking for handouts lightly. But I believe that if you don’t ask for help, you won’t receive it.
