Help with Mark Hutchinson's Medical Expenses

Mark Hutchinson, who is completing his 14th year of covering Oconomowoc sports and his 45th year in his profession, has been blessed with tremendous support for his GoFundMe campaign since his cancer diagnosis and surgery in the spring of 2021.

He continues to receive monthly injections to treat his cancer along with monthly diagnostic procedures and periodic scans.

These scans and the mounting expenses of diagnostics, treatment and meds have continued to accumulate, and now his health journey has taken a recent turn.
Three additional health concerns have arisen, and he is again reaching out for financial assistance, shares and prayers.

Mark extends his heartfelt gratitude to the many who have supported him since his ordeal began, and he prays for the Lord's continued blessings on all of you.

Several of "Hutch's Heroes" have offered the following testimonials on his behalf:

Sal Logue, Oconomowoc High School Teacher & Head Football Coach:
"As many of us are aware, 'Hutch' has been battling his cancer for the last couple of years. As a result of this battle, several new health issues have arisen, and 'Hutch' needs our community support to offset some of the rising costs of healthcare he is challenged with. 'Hutch' has gone above and beyond in highlighting so many of our kids at Oconomowoc High School and within the Oconomowoc community. I think we all know that 'Hutch' bleeds purple and gold! If you can offer any type of financial support, please consider supporting one of the pillars of our community! We are OCON!"

Samantha (Solveson) Osterndorf, Oconomowoc High School Athletic Hall of Famer, Founder of Making A Mark Foundation to Benefit Families Impacted by Alzheimer's:
"Anyone even remotely tied to the sports community in Oconomowoc knows Hutch. If you don’t know Hutch, the next time you’re at the baseball diamond, soccer pitch, field house or gridiron, look for the quiet, unassuming guy wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses. He’ll be intently watching whatever sports spectacle is happening in front of him ready to deliver a timely article to the newspaper that’ll boost up whatever Oconomowoc team and athletes are competing, win or lose. Sometimes this is the only time in a kid’s life that they’ll get to shine in the spotlight. I wonder if he realizes all of the 'That was the coolest day of my life' moments he has provided athletes over the years with his writing. So many people know Hutch for his love for sports and frequenting the many events that happen in the Oconomowoc community every year. They know him for his unrelenting desire to give back in any and every way that he is able. What many people would never know about him is he has been battling major medical issues for a long time. Never with a complaint. Always with a smile on his face. And he needs our help as the medical bills seem never-ending! PLEASE consider donating if you’re able and give back to the man who has given so much to this community. If you are not able to donate, please share his story with others. Knowing Hutch, I also know sending positive thoughts and prayers his way would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for considering!"

Roger Johnson, Ashippun Old Sox Softball Commissioner, Founder of "A Child's Smile" Charity:
"It’s not enough that Mark Hutchinson has had to battle cancer for the last few years. Now he’s being tested for additional health issues. Mark is dedicated to the world of sports. He is the best sports editor the Oconomowoc Enterprise has ever had. Besides covering all levels of sports from grade school to the professional level, he writes those fascinating human interest stories about individual athletes past and present. Mark does it all, and the community cannot afford to lose him. He deserves the support of our community -- especially our sports community as he faces his life-threatening health issues. I hope the readers of the Oconomowoc Enterprise and the coaches, players and sports fans of our community come through for him."

Jim Harmann, Ashippun Old Sox Senior Softball Group:
"I first got to know Mark while playing softball with a group of guys called the Old Sox -- players between the ages of 55 and 85. The group bonded over jokes and softball. Mark plays with this group, and, unfortunately, developed health problems. Mark always showed up with a positive attitude no matter his problems. When you asked Mark how things were, he'd respond, 'I'm putting up the good fight! Please help my teammate and friend if you can."

Chris Foerstera, Oconomowoc Area Baseball Club/Oconomowoc Legion Baseball:

“You might not know the man, but you know his work if you have ever followed, been part of, or had children participating in Oconomowoc sports. Mr. Mark Hutchinson has been tirelessly reporting on Oconomowoc prep and area sports since 1978. His work is displayed weekly in the local Oconomowoc newspaper. He has won dozens of awards and put many of our children's and friends' images, experiences and quotes to paper. You might recognize him from behind the bench, outside the locker room getting an interview, or watching a game in the crow's nest. He understands our players because Mark is Oconomowoc sports! Due to Mark's mounting expenses of diagnostics, treatment and meds, he is reaching out for financial assistance, shares and prayers. Mark extends his heartfelt gratitude to the many who have supported him since his ordeal began, and he prays for the Lord's blessing on all of you. I am reaching out to all of Oconomowoc, asking friends, family, and the community to reach deep and give a little bit to help out a lot! I am not sure how much we can raise, but undoubtedly the financial burden for Mark has been tremendous. Let's help him out a little bit so that he can continue giving Oconomowoc the sports coverage as only he can.”

Tricia Griswold, Oconomowoc sports parent:

“Mark Hutchenson is one of the kindest people I have met. He is a friend to anyone he meets. He is the biggest supporter of our communities kids in athletics. He writes amazing articles for us families to hold onto. Mark also is there to support families in need -- families that are going through rough times. Our community has had a lot of athletes that have gone through some tough times -- either themselves or a family member. Mark is always there to fill us in on how we can all help. He is an amazing person -- a person who genuinely cares about his community and the families in it.”

Gloria Werner, mother of the late Cade Werner and co-founder of Play4Cade Organ Donor Awareness Initiative: Our “Angel in the Outfield”

"We first heard of Mark Hutchinson when we were told about an article in the Waukesha Freeman and Oconomowoc Enterprise that this person wrote about the memorial event we host each year for our son we lost a couple of years prior. First of all, I wondered how in the world this guy from Waukesha heard of our event (Ha. … a bit naive, I know). I’ll admit I was a bit worried before I read it. When you go through tragedy you find people like to write about the negative to ‘make it good’. To our surprise, when we finally got our hands on it, the article was so well-written and so positive, it almost brought me to tears. Someone actually pulled the positive out of our whole situation! We heard this Mark was a member of the Ashippun Old Sox softball team, an incredibly generous, hilarious and severely talented group of men who play softball to keep active but also play at different charities and raise money for many causes. So we went to a game that they played against the Ghost Players from the Field of Dreams. The game was dedicated to Mark due to his cancer battle and other health issues. After the game, my husband and I followed Mark to his car to formally introduce ourselves and thank him for the nice article. By the way, he has written a beautiful article each year to support and raise awareness for our event. Since then, Mark and The Ashippun Old Sox have continued to entertain us and raise money for us at our event by competing against our son’s friends/brothers' team. And last year, Mark asked if he could have one of our son’s team shirts. I of course was honored he would want one. This spring when we saw Mark again, he shared with us that he wore that shirt to his final league softball game of the season and dedicated those games to our son Cade. The Ashippun Old Sox staged two upsets and claimed second in the tourney! We are honored to have gotten to know Mark and now call him our friend. He has helped us so much. I am praying everyone is generous and we can show Mark what he has shown us! There ARE amazing people in this world yet willing to help when needed. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU, MARK. You will always have a special place in the hearts of the Werner family and Play4Cade!!"
