Luca's Treatment, Care & Recovery

Dear Friends & Family of The Gucciardos,
It is with a heavy heart that I share with you today that Luca Gucciardo, son of Michael (Mickey) Gucciardo, was recently diagnosed with cancer. It is a rare type of cancer called Synovial Sarcoma, which affects deep tissues and is more commonly found in children. Luca has a tumor under his left arm which is located very close to the main artery and nerve of the arm, making surgery more difficult and complex. This is all happening very fast as Luca was just diagnosed shortly after Christmas. Fortunately, Luca has received great medical attention over the past few weeks, and swift action is taking place. Luca and Michael will be traveling up to Charlottesville, Virginia as soon as next week to begin radiation and chemo treatment with a great team of doctors and researchers at UVA Hospital, followed by surgery once the other treatments are completed.
For those of you who don’t know Luca, he is a senior in high school, very involved in athletics and an all-round super sweet guy. He currently runs track for the high school track team and has had a long and dedicated career since the age of 8 playing intramural and high school baseball as well as high school basketball. He has a fantastic and supportive girlfriend, and a loving family he means the world to. Luca’s Dad, Michael Gucciardo (Mickey) has been a long-time resident of Floyd and a great community supporter during the 35 years he has lived in Floyd, serving the community as chef/owner of both The Pine Tavern Restaurant and Mickey G’s Bistro.
Both Michael and Luca wanted me to thank you in advance for any financial support you are able to give. But more importantly, they would appreciate any and all prayers you could make on Luca’s behalf. They are a firm believer in the power of prayer and send their love and gratitude in advance for your support during this very difficult time.
As you know, small businesses (especially restaurants) have struggled since the pandemic began. Forced closures, followed by increased supply chain costs and inflation have made it very difficult to stay afloat. The additional financial burdens Michael is up against due to this diagnosis will certainly be lessened by our collective generosity and the assistance it will provide will be a great relief during this very challenging and worrisome time.
Michael and Luca’s whole family join me in thanking you from the bottom of our hearts for your support and for keeping Luca in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult road ahead.
Sincerely, Gigi Kent
