Help with Kira's Unexpected Medical Expenses -

Kira and I are from Sacramento, California but currently live and go to school in San Luis Obispo. My name is Marilyn and I am Kira’s owner. I am a full time college student who works 20-30 hours a week. I spend almost every free minute I have with Kira. Kira loves to play with her neighbor doggy friends, go to the snow and the beach, go on hikes, run, and chase her tennis ball. She is a 3.5 year old German Shepard with the sassiest, spunkiest, and sweetest personality. Kira is my best friend.

Since January 27th, Kira has been suffering from violent seizures that myself and the vet have been trying to control with medication. The more seizures she has, the more often she will have seizures. This leads to a greater likelihood of permanent brain damage and uncontrollable seizures that are never ending, resulting in a terrible quality of life.

On May 11, Kira had 5 seizures in less than an hour. Each one got worse and worse, and the only way to stop the 5th was for the vet to sedate her before she had a heat stroke. Ever since this day Kira has been 100% blind in her left eye and has decreased vision in her right eye. There is still hope her eyesight will come back, but as of right now the belief is that it will be permanent due to brain damage from the excessive seizures. Before May 11, the bills totalled about $400.

On May 16, after spending 5 days at home with me trying to adjust, she started having seizures again almost every hour for 2 days. I drove her to the emergency vet at 2 am two nights in a row and her usual vet two other times for additional sedation during this time period. On Tuesday, May 18, I drove to the UC Davis Veterinary hospital at 6 am to try and get help from their expert neurologists. Kira’s quality of life at this point was the most difficult thing I have ever had to witness. After May 18, the bill totalled almost $3,400.

UC Davis Neurology believes Kira is suffering from an intracranial (inside of the brain) disease. More than likely, Kira has very bad epilepsy. However, Davis is not entirely convinced she does not have a tumor or inflammatory condition leading to the seizures. It will cost me almost $10,000 to test for these other possibilities. As of right now, we are all just praying that her new anti-seizure medication works and that any future seizures are controllable.

I am extremely happy to be able to say that since going to Davis, Kira has not had a seizure in 48 hours. The hopes are that the new medication they gave her will control her seizures enough so that she can live as normal as possible and that her future medical bills will be manageable for me to cover. With that being said, her medical bills in this past week and half have absolutely overwhelmed me. I am already working as much as I physically can while focusing on school.

I did not expect to ever make one of these and I was very hesitant to do so. However, my family and close friends have convinced me that asking for help is not always a bad thing. I have created this to help cover the amount I have spent so far and the rest that is to come in the next few weeks with necessary additional liver and blood tests. I do not expect to raise the entire goal but I did just want to be clear on why it is set to be what it is. I am praying there will not be anymore major vet bills related to her disease. Additionally, although I appreciate any help anyone is willing to offer me, I ask for prayers more than anything else. I truly believe prayer is the most powerful weapon that God has granted us to handle life in this world and I will cherish any prayer that is sent our way. Thank you all so much, I promise to keep you updated.
