Hi everyone, thanks for taking the time to read about Kira’s story. My name is Sara and I’m fundraising for my brother Donald, and his girlfriend, Karen. Karen is the mom of a 2 year old German Shepherd, Kira. I’ve known Karen for 12+ years and she’s family to me, so it’s a no brainer to help her during this difficult time. ❤️
About 2 weeks ago something was off with Kira… she seemed tired all the time, didn’t want to eat, body shakes day and night, and fluctuating fever. Over the past two weeks, Kira has been to multiple vets and to an emergency room on 10/19. Several tests were taken at that ER in order to figure out what Kira was suffering from. We were left to worry and wait in the meantime for test results to come in before proceeding with any sort of treatment.
On Monday morning, 10/23, Kira was unable to walk. Her neck was also affected, making her unable to move her head. She also seemed to be in a great deal of pain. She was rushed to a different ER, Los Angeles Animal Specialty Emergency and Rehabilitation (LAASER). She was met with amazing doctors, neurologists, and nurses who helped Kira over the course of 2 days. All while being so informative to Donald and Karen, easing some of their worry throughout. Kira had several more tests done, an ultrasound, and was kept overnight to remain stable. Ultimately an MRI showed that Kira has a spinal infection called Discospondylitis, which is a fungal infection. If not treated, Kira can lose motor ability or the situation could become fatal if the infection spreads. At the moment, we don’t exactly know what type of fungal infection she has. So yesterday, Kira underwent a fluoroscopy procedure in order to retrieve a sample of the fluid in her spine. We are currently waiting on results, but have been told that Kira has a long road of recovery ahead of her. We are hoping surgery is not the case, and that a less invasive treatment option is best.
My heart breaks for Karen and her furbaby, Kira. I had a German Shepherd of my own, Skoshi. He was 5 years old and we unexpectedly lost him 2 months ago. My world felt shattered on that night and I just can’t imagine something awful happening to Kira and to Karen. I want to raise money for all the medical bills, upwards of $12,000 so far… and more to come with Kira’s road to recovery. Any bit helps, and I know that Skoshi would donate all his tennis balls to Kira during this time, if he could. ❤️
