Help Jayden
Our dear friend Jayden MacKenzie in Bali, Indonesia needs our help and support. On Tuesday, February 4th, Jayden got into a horrible accident at his Ubud home. He fell approx. 4 metres off his balcony after leaning on a handrail that collapsed and sent him falling. He fell flat on his back and broke three of his vertebrae in his spine, which has resulted in surgery fusing together five of his vertebrae. On top of this he has multiple fractured ribs- two which required titanium steel to put back into place. The fractured ribs punctured his lungs and required thoracic surgery. Due to the injuries, Jayden has lost all sensation from his abdomen down.
He is currently recovering in a hospital in Bali after going through two emergency surgeries on his spine and lungs to keep him alive.
The surgery went well and the good news is there is no damage to the spinal cord - we are confident that with ongoing rehabilitation care, he will make a full recovery and should be able to walk again in 6 - 12 months’ time.
His wife Lola is by his side and his family in Australia have been contacted and are aware of the terrible accident.
The approximate cost of emergency operation that Jayden underwent and medical assistance within 3 days of hospitalization is at around $70,000 AUD. Jayden does have insurance, but unfortunately it will only cover a tiny percentage of the total bill. The insurance has been a rollercoaster of confusion and we are devastated to discover that his policy was misleading in terms of cover. He’s embarrassed to even ask for help.... but we knew that with such a sensitive operation with the ramifications being left changing if not threatening we had to soldier on regardless of the cover.
We are happy we were able to get the best Neurospine Surgeon to work on Jayden. We feel confident we made the best informed decisions at that time. The operations have been a success despite the spiralling costs. Remarkably we feel with his strength and determination he will make a full recovery, which we are over the moon about but it won’t be without hard work and much needed financial support.
Over the past 5 years Jayden has been living in Bali, many of you would have come to know him from his contributions via the Ubud Food Festival and Restaurant Locavore. Jayden is loved by many for his ‘bigger than Ben Hur’ approach to life and his willingness to help out and go beyond for others.
If you know him quite well personally - you will understand that Jayden will not let this defeat him or slow him down. He will give it everything and has every intention of being able to get back on his feet and enjoy a few rounds of 10 ball with his mates.
Jayden’s words before he went to surgery:
“Be prepared to meet the bionic man on the other side of the surgery!”
He’s still got his humour in all of this. Hasn’t missed a beat! ♥️
Jayden really needs our continued support. The surgeries are extremely costly and ongoing medical tests, CT scans and the rehabilitation after hospital will require more and more financial expenses.
Any financial contribution, no matter the amount, will greatly help Jayden to recover.
