Help with Izzy’s Surgical Care

Hi, my name is Meghan. I’m a designer/creative living in Los Angeles.

Izzy (scroll down for photos!) came to me as a foster over Thanksgiving 4 years ago, while I was living in Washington, DC.

Despite my small apartment, the rescue was in a bind, and I felt drawn to help. They’d rescued a really special pup from euthanasia in West Virginia and were determined to get her on the transport up to DC. They told me the dog was big and that they’d be placing her in a larger home ASAP, but really, I was just thrilled to have a chance to foster again.

She was a big girl, alright. She looked part polar bear with beautiful amber eyes and thick white fur.

All of four days after she arrived, I knew I couldn’t part with her, and I officially adopted her. 6 months later, Izzy rode shotgun on our move to the west coast - to a larger home with much better puppy weather.

Izzy was diagnosed with a splenic mass. A splenic mass is certain to bleed, and if the spleen is not removed, it can result in life-threatening blood loss.

Typically, splenic masses are found too late - after they’ve ruptured and the dog has bled to death.

Luckily for us, we were having a consultation for TPLO surgery when the vet stumbled on Izzy’s splenic mass. But we don’t know how much longer we have until her spleen does in fact rupture.

Before I knew it, the vet began prepping Izzy for a splenectomy. They needed half of the cost up front. Not one second did I hesitate. Until, I got the full estimate. $8k-$10k.

I had to come to terms with the fact that I didn’t have the savings to cover Izzy’s surgery. We drove home, cried for a day and a half and then began our research.

In the past three weeks, we’ve had 4 additional consultations with other vets and hospitals. I applied for the Sam Simon Foundation but was turned down because their mobile units aren’t equipped for blood transfusions, which Izzy could need in a worst case scenario. They gave me a few names of organizations who might be able to help but each organization has strict eligibility guidelines. Most require proof that you’ve exhausted all other resources. For example, I was asked to provide a link to my GoFundMe page - which I have now!

The love I have for Izzy is immeasurable. I’ve always been able to care for Izzy. Her needs come before everything. But our time is running out and her life is at risk.

After all my research on splenic masses and our numerous consultations, I’ve reached a decision on where I feel Izzy will receive the best care. They took her original ultrasounds and X-rays. I’ve attached their treatment plan below.

If this weren’t for Izzy, I wouldn’t be asking but she’s all I’ve got. She’s my light, my family and the reason I smile as much as I do. She deserves to live a beautiful healthy life. I figure a few dollars donated could go really far, especially if you forward the link onto a couple friends.
