Help with hospital bills for Britney Stone

8/6/23 update:

Britney has been settling into her new schedule back in NH/MA. Currently, our family and her partner (Brendan) have been ensuring that she is able to get to and from all of her numerous therapy appointments and specialists each week in Boston. This requires our family and her partner to take unpaid time off from work to provide her with transportation into Boston multiple times each week.

Brit still has a long road of recovery ahead of her, and is still adjusting to her physical and cognitive limitations. We appreciate everyone’s continued support during this time and hope that she continues to improve.

BRIT’S BEEN RELEASED!

7/17/23: Britney was discharged from Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation last night and is making her journey back east!

Unfortunately, Brit’s and my moms flights were cancelled last night so they are still in Michigan. Hopefully they will be able to take the flight that’s scheduled for this evening.

Fingers crossed for getting our girl home soon

7/13/23 Update:
Brit has been working really hard with her therapy groups, and has been getting stronger each day. Unfortunately, due to the extent of her injuries, her doctors do not want her resuming her normal nursing duties for 6 months. Although she qualifies for short term disability, this will only be providing her with a percentage of her base pay, it does not include her night shift or weekend differentials. On top of that, there is still coordination of getting Britney home. She needs to get a flight back to Massachusetts, where she lives. My mom has been with my sister at the rehab, supporting her and staying in a hotel nearby while working remotely. She will need a flight back from Michigan as well.

Once discharged, Brit will need someone to bring her to and from her specialist appointments, which are still to be determined but include speech therapy, PT, OT, vestibular therapy, an ortho-trauma specialist and physiatrist. She will not be able to drive so the expense of providing her with transportation/gas to appointments has been a concern.

It has now been almost three weeks since the accident happened when my sister and 3 others were driving in a Chevy Malibu and were t-boned by a Chevy Suburban with 9 passengers. Brit’s car insurance will be primarily taking on the case to help with some medical costs. However, once she has met her auto insurance max coverage, medical insurance will then be exhausted and then she will be responsible for the remaining balance.

If you are able to donate to help Britney during this time, she would greatly appreciate any little bit. This has been a physically and emotionally traumatic incident that will unfortunately not be resolved for some time. Simple things such as normal, unassisted walking will take a lot of time and therapy to help her return to baseline. Her short term memory is still giving her difficulties at times, so if she is forgetful or repetitive when she talks to you, just be patient with her. She’s been trying to stay positive and has been cracking jokes here and there but has been so thankful to receive the outpouring of love and support from you all.

7/9/23 Update: Brit has finally started to walk again!! It's still very difficult for her to get up totally unassisted, but with the help of her therapist, and use of a walker, she is able to walk in the hallway. So far they still recommend another two weeks of inpatient rehab before she goes home, of which she will need to take a flight back.

7/2/23 update:
Today Britney had a really busy day! In the morning, she worked with her Occupational Therapist and did some upper body exercises in the gym.

After lunch, she worked with her Speech Language Therapist to do some cognitive exercises, spatial awareness tests and worked on her executive functioning using mazes and other activities.

In the afternoon, Brit got to work with her Physical Therapist in the pool! (She says this has been the highlight of her week )

After taking a brief rest, Britney had some visitors and was reunited with her friend Allison The two are currently enjoying dinner together and reminiscing on their years of friendship.

As of right now, we’re still waiting to see how long Brit will be in rehab for. Since it’s a holiday weekend, we won’t have a better idea until Wednesday or Thursday.

6/30/23 Update: Brit was transferred to Mary Free Bed Inpatient Rehab Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan yesterday afternoon. Today, I (Steph) was finally able to get a flight out to be with her. She had a shower this morning and we went for a quick stroll around the courtyard in her wheelchair. She continues to deal with pain in the morning and when she transfers, which has been causing her to be nauseated and vomit. She is still requiring 2 people to assist her and is using several different mobility aids to move around (wheelchair, walker, gait belt, slide board).
Britney has been having some obvious difficulty with memory as well as word finding, comprehension and concentration and will be working with Speech Therapy while she is in rehab and when she comes home.
Please continue to keep her in your thoughts as she has a long road ahead of her. She is one tough cookie but the support of her friends and family has been vital during this process.

6/28/23 Update: Britney was able to work with physical therapy today and seems to be getting stronger. She is still having moderate pain and is unable to put weight on her right foot. Tonight, she finally had an appetite and was able to eat some Mac and Cheese! The plan is for her to go to a rehab hospital nearby in the next day or so. She will need aggressive therapy to get her strong enough to be able to safely travel back home to Mass. Once she's home, she will be out of work for a few months while she works on improving her mobility. She is still having some cognitive difficulties as a result of the concussion as well as her medication for pain.

I cannot thank you all enough to everyone who has come together and shown support to my sister. It sucks that she has to spend her birthday (yesterday) away from home and in the hospital, but her nurses, doctors and all the specialties have taken great care of her. Please send her and her friends some positive vibes as we wish for a speedy recovery for them. If you are able and would like to donate to her friends' GoFundMe accounts, the links are below.

Hi, my name is Stephanie and I am the older sister of Britney.

My sister Britney was in a terrible car accident over this past weekend (6/24/23) while traveling out of state for a friend's wedding. The car she was riding in was hit by another driver; leaving her with a broken pelvis, fractured vertebrae, sacral fracture, and a concussion. Two of the other passengers are currently in critical condition in the ICU. Britney is a nurse and will need extensive rehab while she heals from her injuries leaving her unable to work. On top of that, she is hospitalized in Michigan, far away from her home in Massachusetts. I am raising funds to help her with medical expenses, rehab costs, and accommodations for her partner who was also in the accident (who also sustained injuries) and is her only support person on the ground in Michigan. Any amount is helpful, we are hoping to raise enough money for her and her partner so that Britney can recover until fully stable out of state. This has been a devastating and terrifying experience for my sister who has dedicated her life to caring for other people. We wish all the passengers a speedy recovery and are appreciative to any donations you are able to make.

I will be adding updates to this forum regarding the condition of my sister during her recovery.

Thank you all so much,

Stephanie
