Hi Friends!

On December 20th, I noticed Freya didn't eat, just slept all day, and generally was not herself. I ended up bringing her to the emergency vet, where we found out she has Non-Regenerative Anemia. What this means is that her bone marrow is not making red blood cells.

The vet explained that her body got used to the lower red blood cell count, kind of like if a person went up to a higher elevation and got used to it. But eventually, her body couldn't keep up.

They wanted me to bring her back the next day to see if there was any improvement.

There wasn't.

I then brought Freya to Long Island Vet Specialists, where she was kept for 2 days, received a blood transfusion, and a bunch of other tests to see what was going on. She was negative for everything (No FIV, feline leukemia, etc.). This means her bone marrow wasn't making blood cells, or she has an autoimmune disease that is destroying everything.

Her levels improved after the transfusion, and I brought her home with instructions to give her Prednisolone as an immune suppressant to try and get her bone marrow to create blood cells.

Unfortunately, when brought back for a blood count recheck, her numbers have gone back down. (This likely means an autoimmune disorder that is destroying the blood cells.) We were instructed to up her dose of the steroid, and she was given an iron shot.

Luckily, Freya seems to have picked back up a bit. There is no cure, so we are monitoring her and giving her all the pets and cuddles. She has been eating and walking around more, though much slower than usual.

Because of the intensive care that Freya received, we have had a huge vet bill we need to deal with. (Of course, at the worst time of the year.) Any help would be appreciated, as money is definitely a struggle for me at the moment.
