Help with Expenses Related to Treating Leukemia

Donation protected
Meet the Cahoon family. Max is a 31-year-old who is a husband to Chelsea and a father to 2 small children, Jaxon (9) and Stella (6). Max was diagnosed with a rare form of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) just 2 weeks ago. Prior to his diagnosis, he was strong, healthy and the provider for his family. He was active and enjoyed jiu jitsu. In fact, he was training for a tournament in March. Unfortunately, he caught COVID-19 and an infection in his thumb which his body was unable to fight due to the underlying condition of AML. This form of leukemia is very rare and requires treatment which includes induction chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant to ensure his body will not grow the cancer back. Treatment must take place in Seattle, and he must spend the next 4-8 months there. He will not be able to return to his normal life for a year or longer. While in treatment, he will need a caregiver 24 hours a day to monitor him for any signs of infection or complications. His wife, Chelsea, will be that person for at least the first month.

As you know, there are huge expenses associated with cancer treatment, the expense of housing while in Seattle, and the loss of income for an entire year. They're fortunate to have insurance coverage, but it doesn't cover 100% of the costs. The cost of housing is between $2,000-$3,000 per month while in Seattle plus maintaining their home in Coeur d'Alene. They can't give that home up because of the housing situation here. IF they could find another house, their rent will be 2-3 times more than they're paying now.

I set this up as a way to ease the burden on this young family so that they only have to focus on treatment and getting better rather than worrying about paying expenses and bills.

It's going to be a long, hard road and extremely difficult to be away from his children, family and friends, but Max's oncologist here in CdA says the physicians in Seattle are leading the way in treating this type of cancer and this is his best option.
