Help With Diesel’s Vet Bills
Diesel is our beloved bengal cat who loves the outdoors and has been a part of my wife and I's relationship since we met. He has such an amazing personality and he’s been loving our yard and woods, enjoying the spring weather everyday until Friday when he slept all day, and same thing Saturday. He is not eating anymore, barely drinking, and just sleeping. We brought him to the emergency room Sunday where they found he had a fever, was dehydrated, had lost weight and had a slight heart murmur. They did a blood test and found his platelets and white blood cell counts scarily low, but they said the range of things that could be causing it is very broad, including cancer, autoimmune disorders or viral infections, parasites, or diseases, so they couldn’t narrow anything down without hospitalization and running more tests.
We decided to take him home and give him a broad antibiotic to see if his behavior or appetite improved. After a few days of that there was no improvement so we brought him back to the vet today to run bloodwork again (as they recommended we should when they discharged him Sunday), and there was no improvement in the blood work. They said they believe the only way he could turn around is if we hospitalize him for hydration/nutrition while running other tests to try and determine the root cause, but that is a decision that brings a lot of financial strain at a time we are feeling it the most. They also said they believed he is sick enough for us to consider euthanizing him if we couldn’t go forward with hospitalization. They sent him home to us with an appetite stimulant so hopefully we can get him eating again to buy us a few days to figure out what to do. They said this would just be putting a bandaid on though, and in order to turn around he would have to be hospitalized.
We are experiencing a lot of grief and stress right now with my mom passing two weeks ago and now with the bills, paperwork, and emotions piling up already from that we are faced with three options for our beloved Diesel; pray for a miracle that he starts eating and whatever the cause of his low blood counts miraculously goes away and he recovers, hospitalize him for treatment and further tests to find the root cause and then determine options which ultimately could lead to the final option anyway which is to euthanize him.
My wife and I take pride in being independent, financially and otherwise, and to not rely on others to help with our problems so it is a really hard decision to reach out to the community for help, but I feel like there is no other time our family could use some support if not right now.
We ask that if you do decide to help, you do so in small donations, considering the hospitalization could ultimately lead to us having to euthanize him anyway. Getting a recovery out of Diesel would give us such a boost of morale and happiness when we need it the most, and your contributions would help us get to that opportunity without us having to make the tough moral decision of taking on considerably more financial strain or euthanizing him without finding the root cause. Thank you for helping if you can!
