My name is Claire, and I am fundraising for my mom.

On Wednesday May 18th, around 4am, my mom was taken to the hospital via ambulance after being sick the last week, and also having trouble walking. Upon further testing and examination, it was determined that she had suffered from a heart attack. She was positive for Covid. She has a huge mass in her lower abdomen that was also causing an infection.

The local hospital was not suitable for her extensive care or surgery to remove the mass, so she was life-flighted to OHSU.
After arriving at OHSU the doctors were concerned as she appeared to be very incoherent and looked over her previous scans from the local hospital, in which they found several lesions on her brain. They also believe the mass in her abdomen could be ovarian cancer and is guesstimated around 9-10”.
Wednesday night, they did a CT first, and it showed growth of the lesions. They decided it was necessary to intubate and do an MRI Thursday morning.

Around 2pm on Thursday, my step dad met with the oncologist who stated that due to the inflammation in my mom's lungs and heart, they did not believe she would make it off the table if they tried to remove the mass. They contemplated a biopsy and then chemo to shrink it first. However, they decided that if she was well enough for chemo, she would be well enough for surgery which is the better option.
So Friday, they decided that they will wait for her lungs and heart to heal for surgery as they are already showing improvement on the most recent scans. They also discovered that her heart attack was stress-induced and that she had a hypoperfusion stroke. They also found spots on her lungs and clots in her lungs and legs, so they put her on antibiotics and blood thinners.

Friday May 20th, they removed her breathing tube and she was able to breathe on her own. They also asked her to follow their finger and she started to.

Saturday night, the nurse advised she was still doing well breathing on her own while on low oxygen. She is able to speak some words and even knew her name and that she was in the hospital but seems to not want to answer or talk at times. Due to the stroke, she does appear to have some left side deficits but we do not know the full extent of them or if they are permanent. They also gave her a dose of pain meds as she appeared to be groaning in pain, however she could not tell the nurse where the pain was.

All of this was extremely unexpected and the road to recovery is going to be very long. The list of expenses continue to add up and at this point there is no end in sight. We do not know how long she will be in the hospital nor the amount of after care that will follow. She will also be out of work for an extended amount of time and depending on her condition when she is released from the hospital may cause them to have to move out of their current second story apartment. Anything helps, and we appreciate everyone who is willing to donate and/or share her story to help get us through this difficult time.

I will also continue to post updates daily on her conditions.
