Help with Carlee & Darryle's Moving Accident

Donation protected

BACKGROUND:

Our good friends Carlee and Darryle recently made the major life decision to move from Santa Barbara to Salt Lake City. After spending the past several weeks packing up their lives and all of their belongings, they officially set a move date for April 25th. Carlee's father Julian and cousin Jacob kindly offered to make the 12 hour drive out from SLC to help. Julian borrowed a truck from another relative and rented a large enclosed trailer from someone on Craiglist to assist.

THE ACCIDENT:

After 8.5 hours of driving from SB to SLC, the unthinkable happened. The trailer picked up too much speed on a downhill stretch of highway and began to fishtail. At this point there was nothing that could be done and the trailer slid off the highway and flipped, completely disintegrating along with everything inside. Thankfully, the truck somehow managed to stay upright and no one was hurt!

THE AFTERMATH:

At this point Julian and Jacob had to stay on scene a deal with the mess. The Highway Patrol requires that all accidents be cleaned up by a salvage company, at the expense of the owner. A company was called out to their remote location and spent the better part of the day picking through the wreckage and hauling it off to their storage facility. In the meantime, Carlee, Darryle and Julian all started calling their insurance companies to assess what coverage they have. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the truck was borrowed and the trailed was rented from a private 3rd party, all of their insurance companies are claiming that they are not responsible to cover the accident. The trailer owner's insurance will not cover anything and their renters insurance will only cover personal items that they have receipts for, which is almost nothing. Carlee and Julien had to pay the owner of the trailer the full value in cash so that they could obtain the title. Tomorrow they are driving down to pass the title to the salvage company so it can be taken to the dump.

At this point it is looking like they will be liable for the full value of the rented trailer, in addition to cost of the salvage company services and any damage to the truck. The current estimate is $35,000, and this does not include any of their personal items.

GOAL:

Moving is hard enough without the stress of losing everything you own. Add to this the burden of your family going into financial hardship for simply trying to help out and it quickly becomes overwhelming. This is going to be a long and stressful process dealing with all the parties involved to sort out the financial mess and put the pieces back together. While it is yet to be seen what little insurance might cover, it is evident that it won't be the full amount and it won't be anytime soon. Carlee and Darryle are amazing friends who would be there for anyone in their time of need and Julian was just trying to do the right thing and be supportive of his family. This unfortunate accident has put all of them in an awful position. Therefore I am asking that you contribute what you can to help these guys while they work through this challenging time.
