Earlier this August, my brother Brent was hospitalized twice within one week. He was in severe pain, suffering from complications of undiagnosed Type 2 Diabetes and RCVS—Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome, a rare condition that affects blood vessels in the brain.
Before doctors figured out what was happening, Brent went through:
- Multiple ER visits
- An EKG, CT scan, and MRI
- IV treatments and blood draws
- Specialist consultations
- Several nights in the hospital
By the time he was finally stabilized and discharged, the bills had already started piling up.
Brent is slowly healing and even returning to work, but he faces two enormous challenges:
- 1. Medical debt from the hospital stays and testing
- 2. The long-term cost of insulin and other diabetes medications
Because Brent’s job doesn’t provide health insurance, and he doesn’t qualify for Medicaid, he is currently uninsured. He plans to purchase coverage through the ACA Marketplace during open enrollment in November, but until then, he’s carrying this financial burden alone.
This GoFundMe is to help Brent:
- Pay down hospital and emergency bills
- Afford his ongoing diabetes medications
- Prepare for the cost of health insurance later this year
Here’s Brent, in his own words:
“I know this debt is ultimately mine to carry. I chose a job without insurance, played a risky game, and after many years, I finally lost. If this campaign doesn’t succeed, I’ll do my best to manage the burden alone. But if you are in a position to help, I’ll be forever grateful—literally and figuratively in your debt.”
Even a small donation will help ease the stress of this difficult time and give Brent the chance to focus on recovery, not bills.
