This Friday the 23rd, it's been detected that one of the senior cats of my shelter, Asustada, has contracted Feline Leukemia (FeLV), a highly contagious and deadly virus that has put not only her health, but the entire Miaozota shelter at risk. Due to the costs of maintaining the shelter, I'll have to rely on this campaign to raise funds for an urgent treatment to save Asustada's life, which is estimated to be around 1000€ if she reacts positively.
The other 2000€ will be used to test the rest of the shelter's cats, to rule out the possibility that they're also infected with Feline Leukemia (FeLV).
Asustada is a female cat who wouldn't get anywhere near us, she and her sister Aterrada would always avoid us. Over time, she slowly began to trust us, started approaching our house more often, seeing that we bothered to feed her. One day, a strong rainstorm hit our home, and we heard meows of agony outside. The cat was giving birth at our doorstep with her sister by her side, but after opening our doors, they ran away scared in the middle of the storm. Scared, she took two of her baby cats and they ran away with us being powerless to give them any shelter, Asustada with one baby cat in her mouth and, to our horror, her sister with the other.
A short while later, we realized that she and her baby cats were doing fine in a nearby nest, and for whatever reason, she began to trust us. Her kittens were born at the same time as two other female cats who trusted us better gave birth to theirs. However, it shocked us that Asustada was catching so much attention, not only from her own kittens, but from the other two female cats as well, so much that she began to breastfeed them. That led us to the realization that she was a nursing cat, a mother who liked to take care of all kittens.
Eventually, she showed up at our doorstep walking awkwardly, as if she was nauseated. She looked at us with a tilted head, and after taking her to the vet and treating her, we learned that somehow, Asustada had taken quite a strong hit. Not long after that, a Feline Calicivirus outbreak had left Asustada toothless and the once beautiful black cat she was was now losing weight and looking very skinny. Now that she was letting us touch her and carry her, we took the opportunity to shelter her, especially after finding out she suffers from such a deadly disease as the Feline Leukemia (FeLV). I wish to have the opportunity to give her the quiet enjoyable life she deserves, at least as much as science allows me to give her as much quality of life as possible.
