Prayers and help needed for Baby Aniston!
My friend, Natalie Barton York's , daughter Taylor Barton Phillips will be 24 weeks pregnant in 2 days. Taylor is married to Austin Phillips. Taylor will be undergoing surgery April 6 on her unborn child, Aniston Grace Phillips, at Vanderbilt Hospital and will be on strict bedrest for a week until she can move to Vandy's Hospitality House until she delivers baby Aniston. Just by listening to the conversations, they are getting all the forms signed to see what out of state insurance will pay, their cost for both surgeries, their lodging, meals, and anything needed for Aniston so she will have the best care needed to increase her chance to walk, run, and have the most normal life for someone with Spina Bifida. To hear Austin and Taylor talk about how incredible it is to have so much support from all the doctors is amazing. I know they are in the best care possible and God is answering prayers for them daily.
Here is their story........these words are copied from Taylor's facebook page so that I didn't miss any part of their story.
From Taylor......
On February 23rd, we went in for our scheduled anatomy scan and left with information that Aniston had some problems going on. We were told that her head/skull was misshapen and that they couldn’t see a cerebellum. You can imagine the sinking feeling we had when we left the office. We were referred to a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist in Huntsville and couldn’t do anything but wait until that appointment.
Thankfully, we were able to get in quickly and were seen in Huntsville on March 4th. After a detailed anatomy scan, we were told that Aniston has a “very concerning neural tube defect” and will need to be seen by a facility that offers higher care. After we were given our options, we chose to pursue care at Vanderbilt due to the possibility of qualifying for fetal surgery. This also meant more waiting until we could secure an appointment.
While waiting on our appointment at Vandy we have been in contact with one of the nurse practitioners that have discussed in detail with us the extent of Aniston’s condition.
It was confirmed that Aniston has a severe form of Spina Bifida, myelomeningocele, that is located from L4 of her spine down. She also has a Chiari II malformation which explains why our original anatomy scan couldn’t see a cerebellum. (But it’s there, y’all!!) We discussed a little of what this means for Aniston but we mainly waited until we could get to our appointment day.
Today, we were able to go to Vandy for our “big” consult day. We had many scans, an amniocentesis, and consults with many of the doctors that will be involved in mine and Aniston’s care. One scan revealed that Aniston’s nerves may not be protruding out of her back and that is a good thing. We talked through our surgical options and Austin and I expressed that we give consent for fetal surgery if we qualify for it. Prenatal surgery will give Aniston the best possible future with mobility and also (hopefully) reverse her cerebellum malformation. The biggest thing about having the surgery is that Austin and I will have to relocate to Nashville for the duration of my pregnancy. This is something we are prepared for, but will still be a difficult process.
Specific prayer requests:
Please pray that the amniocentesis comes back normal. This is really the only “checkmark” left for us to meet to be able to completely qualify for prenatal surgery.
Pray that I don’t experience any complications from having the amniocentesis.
Pray Aniston continues to grow strong while also protecting her open spinal cord.
Pray for Austin and I to remain mentally, emotionally, and physically strong during this tiring process.
Pray for all of the doctors/surgeons that will be meeting to discuss the final treatment plan.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
