Hi everyone,
This is so hard for me to ask for help. I get so much joy by giving to as many in my community as I can through donations of money and time and sweat equity. I love supporting your kids selling cookies and giving to non-profits that mean something to the people I care about as well as candidates for office that want to improve our community. But as many of you know, I was laid off from my job in April and have been diligently looking for work since, but so far the stars have not aligned and I guess the old saying “when it rains it pours” kind of applies here.
Today Winston (5 months, 35 lbs) was playing outside with his big brother Murphy (7 years, 75 lbs) as they do everyday, having good fun chasing each other through the yard. I guess the play just got a little too rough and Winston started screaming and yelping in pain. I was outside with them and poor Winston’s scream will haunt my nightmares forever. It was blood curdling.
Luckily our vet was able to see us right away and did an xray identifying he fractured his left back leg in the middle of his femur. The good news is that it does not appear to affect his growth plate. The bad news is that he needs surgery and will either get some sort of mesh or plate or pins inserted to help heal. We do have pet insurance, so we expect that a large portion of the medical costs will be covered, fingers crossed. But insurance always declines some portions of costs, we have a $250 deductible, a 10% co-sharing of cost, and a $10,000 policy limit.
Right now the cost from today’s visit with X-rays and pain medications and overnight boarding was $816. The estimate for surgery and hospitalization through Monday is $8,632.20 to $9,405.20. And that doesn’t include what I’m sure will be a few follow up visits to ensure he heals properly.
On top of all of this, we will obviously have to keep him calm and in a crate or supervised and in a separate area from his brothers as he heals. I guess for once the timing is good, that I can tend to him since I’m not working.
Worst case scenario, it looks like this might cost us between $9,448 to $10,200 at minimum. Our co-share of costs given the insurance policy will probably be upwards of $1,000 plus $250 deductible, and that is only if the insurance company agrees the hospital's costs are all “reasonable” and they are willing to reimburse us the policy max of up to $10k.
It would mean so much to Paul, Winston, and me if you could chip in $5, $15, $25 or more if you are able to right now. I promise when I’m back on my feet and working again that I will pay it forward.
